94 Z28 LT1 w/stock internals - Valvetrain help needed

Hey all, I need some help deciding on what roller rockers to get.

What I've got is in my sig, it's a 94 Z28 LT1, bone stock internals and 175k on the clock.. I can hear the valvetrain and it's worn out, and I'm thinking about replacing/upgrading my rockers. Eventually I want to go with something like a cc503 cam and 400+ hp to the wheels someday..

So I'm leaning toward Scorpion 1.5rr's and new 7/16" studs and a pair of Proform valve covers. Should I go 1.6 or 1.7 with the cc503 in mind or will I have any issues?

So obviously I'll need the valve covers for clearance and new gaskets, will I need new springs or can the stock + worn LT1 springs take the new rockers?

What other hardware is recommended on a budget to do the job "right" while I'm in there? I'll be swapping the rockers myself which will be a learning process =)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and/or help!

skip the 1.7's due to valvetrain geometry problems you might encounter

skip the 1.5's since the cost is the same as a 1.6

you don't neccessarily need to clearance valve covers for rockers depending on brand

stock springs barely support the stock cam let alone 175k mile ones

if you want to do it on a relative budget here's what I did for my cc503 setup, not saying its the best parts but it works for me

1418-16 Comp Cams Magnum Self-Aligning Roller-Tip Rocker Arms, 3/8" stud, 1.6 Ratio $186.99
7808-16 Comp Cams Hi-Energy hardened pushrods, 7.200 (OEM Roller - Factory Length) $36.95
10308-1 Crane Valve Spring and Retainer Kits $164.95 (not 100% if this is the right part)

be careful with mis matching components, i've seen a lot of kids around my town do that kind of stuff and get real frustrated with the results. If your going to put a cam in make sure you you get the right springs etc. I would go with 1.6 roller rockers. I just went with a cam package from AI and I can't be happy enough with it. Custom cam and matched valvetrain components to save you the headache of doing it yourself, especially if your not to familiar with it.

well crane dual coil springs are good to .600" lift more than enough for the .53x/.54x lift of the cc503 on 1.6 rockers

Thanks for all the info, I'm leaning more toward using all CompCams stuff if I can. What do you guys think about going with this setup?

CompCam Part #'s

07-503-8 - Xtreme Energy™ 276HR-12

RP1418-16 - SBChevy V8 87-up 1.6 Mag Rockers & HE Pushrod KIT

26918-16 - Beehive™ Valve Spring Set; 1.800" Installed Ht. | 1.055/1.959 O.D.

501-16 - Valve Stem Oil Seals, O-Ring, Stock Guide, 11/32"

So with this type of setup what can I expect for hp/tq numbers with the bolt ons in my signature? And is there anything else I should be replacing like retainers? Any thoughts, suggestions, etc..?

Also is it required to remove the intake manifold during cam removal/installation, will the lifters fall if not removed?

Thanks again!

Some people have reported issues with the Comp Cams 918 springs lately. The older more reliable 918's are sold as the PAC brand and are availible from many of the sponsers of this site.

I personly went with the Crane 10308 springs for my 503 cam and haven't had any issues. Also, I used the Crane 1.6 aluminum rockers and didn't have to clearance the valve covers any.

As for pushrods the best way is to measure and get the correct legnth. Changing things like rockers, lifters and cams can change what legnth push rods will be needed.

I'd stay away from comp lifters and springs

they make good cams and rockers though

yes you need to remove the intake to do a cam swap - as for Comp's springs, they've got everything back on track now - here's my set up:

Comp 503 cam
Comp 1.6 roller rockers
ARP 7/16" studs
Comp 26918 beehive springs
Comp spring locators
Comp 10 degree locks & retainers
GMPP guide plates
Comp hardened push rods
LS7 lifters
