94 Z28 but 97 LT1 Engine
94 Z28 but 97 LT1 Engine
I got to looking and found out that my car is a 94 Z28 but the engine is a 97 LT1 based off the block vin code.
I pulled the computer out of the car I noticed someone has marked it as a 94 LT1 M6.
So now I have a 94 M6 PCM, a 1997 Engine, Non-1997 timing chain cover, vented optispark, Auto Tranny and what I would assume is a 94 Engine Harness.
lol, alot of different years a mixing from what I can tell. What would be the easiest way to get this all straight with minimal problems?
Thanks,
Mike

A 97 LT1 engine will work fine in a 94 car/harness. You need to use the 94 style knock sensor with the OBDI computer. The original motor had a crank position sensor (not sure if it's still there since you said the timing cover was changed) but that not an issue as the 94 PCM doesn't read that sensor. Most likely the previous owner bought a 97 short or long block, used the vented opti, and then used the rest of his 94 parts to complete the exchange.
Well I got the car from a guy at TSP who just lost interest and I am having to finish up some of the final touches and I am starting to notice that things are mixed.
He said the PCM was flashed but never said how exactly so I would assume it was flashed to support the auto tranny.
I haven't even got to start it up yet. Just trying to fix problems now.
How would I go about finding out the knock sensor year or type?
Thanks,
Mike

Measure the resistance of the knock sensor. The 93-95 PCM's are looking for a knock sensor with a resistance of about 4,500 ohms. The stock sensor for the 96-97 engine is 100,000 ohms..... hence the mismatch. If you don't have the right sensor, you will get DTC 43 for the faulty sensor circuit, and the PCM will pull timing almost continuously.
The actual motor doesn't seem to matter, I run a 97 crate motor (complete from heads to oilpan) in my 93 Z. The only thing that I changed was the sensors and TB on the motor itself, and I changed the fuel lines to the 94+ style. The vented opti made no difference in the performance of the motor. I didn't re-use the air or egr system and had it programmed out by pcm for less. Just make sure all your sensor match the ones that are required for your year and you are good.
