Hi All,
Just wondering if I could get some troubleshooting help.
My project won't turn over.
I've put together a 94 z/28 from 2 cars.
I've pulled everything off of the wreck car and installed it on the donor body.
Both cars are 94 z/28 M6 T-Top Tan Leather Int. Like twins, even the same green color.
I moved the PCM, VAT's modules over. I moved over the steering column as well.
I when I was cutting up the wreck, I found another module tucked up under the dash on the drivers side.
Did this need to be moved over as well? What is it?
What is the start procedure of a M6 car? Car in neutral, clutch in, turn key, shouldn't be any more difficult than that?
I get fuel, interior light, door alarm, headlights, turn signals, brake lights all work as they are supposed to.
Any suggestions as to where to start? Scrapped Body Almost Done
There's also an electronic brake control module (EBCM) tucked under the dash by the driver's side door hinge pillar.
I think you should download (FREE) a copy of the 1994 factory service manual (courtesy of GaryDoug). It has diagrams and sketches showing the location of all these components. For the EBCM, see Volume 2, Page 201-8, for example.
Injuneer, Thanks for the links. I've printed them out and will use them to troubleshoot.
Here's the module I found. Its location is left or the steering column, right up against the underside of the dash.
I checked the starter wires, battery cable to the large batt terminal, purple wire to the terminal on the drivers ( r side looking to the rear) on the starter solenoid.
There is a black wire also coming out of the loom with the battery and purple wires. I checked it with my voltmeter, no voltage so I grounded it to the starter.
Attempting to start.
key in DOOR ALARM SOUNDS
turn key to on position /SES LITE/SECURITY FLASHES/CHECK GAGES/LOW TRAC/BRAKE/ABS INOP/SEATBELT/AIRBAG - ALL ON
SECURITY LIGHT FLASHES FOUR TIMES - CHECK GAGES/LOW TRAC/BRAKE/ABS INOP/SEATBELT/AIRBAG - TURN OFF
TURN TO START - NO ENGINE RESPONSE - /SES LITE/SECURITY FLASHES/CHECK GAGES/LOW TRAC/BRAKE/ABS INOP/SEATBELT/AIRBAG - ALL ON
The black wire (with ring lug) bundled with the knock sensor wire, purple starter wire, and the passenger side O2 sensor wires gets grounded to the engine block.. From Shoebox:
Flahing light can be due to failure of the system to read the key pellet (short or open in circuit from cylinder to theft deterrent module - TDM), or TDM is not programmed correctly.
I checked the key pellet, 11.84 Ohms, so I place an 11-ohm resistor across the pins.
I have the black wire grounded to the starter, I'll move it tomorrow,

Key pellet has to be more than 400 ohms. That’s the lowest value they used (pellet #1). I suspect you had an issue with the scale on the ohm meter, and may have read the kilohms (1,000 ohm) scale. 11.84 kilohms means 11,840 ohms, which would correspond to pellet #15.
You are correct sir.
I just ohm'ed out the pellet again.
Back to the electronics store to purchase the correct resistor.
Ever since Radio Shack closed, I've been away from electronics way to long
Sorry, it's taking me a bit to reply, life sometimes gets in the way of the things we'd rather be doing.
Your time and assistance are greatly appreciated.
If I'm following the key chart correctly, this time, with resistance of 11.84k ohms from the key pellet.
I should use a 12k ohm resistor, range of 11.328k ohms, and 12.292k ohms.
I am getting the same symptoms, (dash light sequence), except the security light stays on for 2 to 3 minutes after attempting to start and removal of the key.
What is the correct sequence for the dash lights?
I'm wondering if my VATS is bad?
If you look through the link I posted in post #7, is explains that the SECURITY light wil come on and stay on for about 3 minutes if the key resistance does not match the TDM.
You indicate you took the steering column from the donor car, so that means you also need the TDM from the donor car. You indicate "I moved the PCM, VAT's modules over." Can you confirm that you moved the TDM from the donor car? There are both a TDM and theft deterrent relay.
If you have the correct key and the correct TDM from the donor car, when you installed the resistor matching the key from the donor car, did you do it per Shoebox's diagram - scroll to bottom?
Did you cut the white wires between the key cylinder and the harness connector to the purple and white wires? When you install the resistor, you cannot leave the connector plugged in, or you can not leave the white wires intact, because that means the resistance seen by the TDM is a parallel combination of the key pellet and the new resistor. Either the white wires get cut, or the connector gets unplugged.
If all of the above is done correctly, is there a possibility that you have a bare wire somewhere between the steering column and the TDM, causing a short?
As noted in the Shoebox write up, the TDM seldom fails.
In going over more posts on here, I have determined, you sure help out a lot of people with their Camaro issues.
Also,
It appears I did not move the Theft Deterrent Module (TDM) from the donor vehicle.
What I thought was the TDM was the TCM (Transmission Control Module).
So now I need to purchase a bundle of resisters, for the VAT's range, and test each one.
I'll let you know how it goes.
Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
Thank You.
This is why I ask everyone to include a "SIGNATURE" with basic info about their vehicle, like the trans type. The M6 (94-97) is controlled by the PCM as well - Skip Shift, reverse lockout.
The keyless entry receiver is located behind the passenger side kick panel.
You have to trace the starter circuit from the battery to the starter. Have you checked the fusible link for switched 12V power to the ignition switch (see schematic linked in post #3)? Have you checked for 12 volts at the correct pin (see schematic) on the ignitions switch, with the key in the start position? For the following, with key in "starts" position - Have you verified 12 volts past the clutch start switch? Have you checked for 12 volts out of the Theft Deterrent Relay? Do you have 12 volts at the purple wire on the starter solenoid?
Have you verified 12 volts at the starter, black wire from the battery? Have you verified starter ground to the block?
