94 Engine in a 96 Car

Hey guys. I've got a 96 Z and im looking at an engine out of a 94 formy.

Anyway, I know the timing cover/opti are different.

Is there anything else I should change over to make it work before I drop it in the car?

Reason it concerns me is because I have a 96 computer and harness in the car already.

What about your '96 hub and crank position sensor?

During the swap I would check the sensors to ensure that they are the same and I would use all of the 96 electronics that I could. I believe that you will have no drama with the swap.

I think you're saying you want to run the 94 engine with the 96 computer. If so, you need to swap the knock sensors.

Swapping the opti/cover/etc. is not absolutely necessary, but I'd do it.

There may be other things but knock sensor is the only one I'm sure of.

The 96 PCM needs the crank position sensor for misfire detection. There is no CKP sensor on a 94. As a result of the reluctor wheel for the CKP, the damper/pulley hub is shorter on a 96. To swap over the Opti, you need to do the complete front of the engine.... timing set, CKP sensor, timing cover and hub.

I'm pretty sure I've read that you can program out the misfire detection on an OBD2 computer, so it's not actually necessary to have the crank sensor.
