94 bone stock-what now

Had a 95 6 speed 52 mm with foil tb 3:42 posi k&n 160 thermo underdrive pulleys magnaflow duals new opti and coil and unknown internal mods from several previous owners that was bad to the bone.Forced to sell due to surgeries to left foot.Bought 94 auto 3:23 posi with 63k bone stock from Cali and shipped to VA.WOW like going to a 6 cylinder.Throttle response is terribly slow compared to my 95.Has dual cats as part of Cali emissions and still has original stainless exhaust.Really need guidance to gain at least 30 hp as cheap as possible but mainly seeking some throttle response.Diamond in the rough.Do they make a vented opti to fit this cam.Underdrive pulleys any real help.Already got a foil and ready to trash the air intake system.Does reprogramming fan temp help.Is it worth the work to swap rotor to rotor 3:42 differential or best to save up for 3:73 or 3:91 gears.Do want to use as 3-5 day per week car. With such low miles trying to wait on removing valve covers yet. Also how to get codes from 94 model before obd2.Thanks for any response.:

Translation complete

Cruise and search the board here, there are plenty of bolt on threads over the years. They show what works and what doesn't. The most importing thing people over look on 16 year old cars is actual maintenance issues that need fixed before any modification. Folks usually start tossing parts on the car that already has issues, they get lost with what/when/where the problems are and it's a cluster F from then on.

Good luck.

The 94 CA emissions package did not include dual cats. That began in 95. I bought my 94 new in CA.

Cold air intake, catback exhaust, throttle body coolant bypass, and you have your 30HP. Reprogram the PCM for another 10-15HP.

Underdrive pulley is worthless, since the water pump is not driven by the serpentine belt.

Dyno's of popular mods:

You can get an MSD cap/rotor for the Opti that has a vent of sorts on it. Full replacement requires the cam, timing set, different timing cover, vacuum harness and electrical harness.

Reprogramming fan on/off temps will help if combined with a 160*F thermostat and tweeking the timing.

Going from 3.23 gears to 3.42's will provide a relatively imperceptable 6% increase in rear wheel torque on launch. 3.73's would provide a significant 15% change. Are you sure you have 3.23's (GU5), and not the 2.73's (GU2)? That would explain part of the lethargic performance.

To scan a 94-95 OBD-I you need an OBD-I scanner. Auto Xray made a decent one many years ago, that you can sometimes find used on ebay for low $. Or get free scanning software:
