I'm trying to figure out whether to put a new timing set on my 94 when I change the opti. My car has about 100K miles on it and I'm not sure whether it would be worth it or not. Is there any way to tell other than direct examination whether the chain and gears should be replaced? If you remove the timing cover it seems to me that you may as well go ahead and change the stuff while you're in there.
Anyone have any thoughts?
How much is the Rippie replacement and what would be the advantages of that set over an OEM replacement?

When we did the H/C swap on my car (94), we just put a GM stock replacement on it. The old one was the oringinal and only had 28k on it, but since it had to come off and I didn't have the money to convert I felt that was good enough. I mean, how many storys have you heard about where a new or low mileage timing set has crapped out? If the stock shortblock gives up the ghost, well then its a different story.
