93 LT1 Z28 smoking from around steering wheel area, ideas?

Was driving home today in my 93 Z28 and out of nowhere, the ABS light came on and smoke started pouring out of the area around the steering column. It was intense enough my eyes watered up and I couldn't breathe, had to pull over immediately and jump out.

Turned it off and let the car chill for about 10 minutes. Was close to home, so I fired it back up and drove home with no issues and the ABS light stayed off.

What could this be?

It was a pretty hot day today and the car had been idling for a bit in a drive-through before this happened. The car has a few little issues, I don't know if any of them could be related. I've noticed lately it seems like the electrical system will randomly just drop out when I'm driving for a second -- the headlights will dim and the HVAC blower will stop, but just for a second and then it's back. The wipers stop if I use them for more than a minute, but I think that's a pretty common issue. The turn signals sometimes don't come on if I select them, but again, just randomly and work most of the time.

I'll pull apart the panel under the wheel and see if I notice anything obviously burnt, but not quite sure what to look at.

Thanks!

You mean from inside the car? If so, got to find out what was burning. If it stopped, but might have blown a fuse. Check the fuse boxes to see if any are blown.....if so, don't replace it until you have examined the circuit.
