Steering wheel shakes like crazy at 40mph???

I got a 93 Z28. Its completly stock to the air box.

Driving it home from the guys house yesterday at like 40mph the steering wheel starts to shake violently, not like an out of balance wheel but like i am going to loose control. Then at about 50mph it goes away completly. I havent looked at it yet.

Any suggestions????

You could have a bent/out-of-round wheel. I would check EVERYTHING in the front end of that car...if I were you.

i would have to say.... you have a few wheels out of balance or your rotors are shot

It seems you have at least one of the front wheels out of balance. Had the same problem. You should be able to get all 4 balanced for less than $25 at a tire shop. Night and day difference

another vote for wheels. either out of round, balance or lugs not torqued properly. yes, improper torque will cause the wheels and rotors to warp slightly.

however, there are other things to check. ball joints may cause a shimmy, bearings could, tie rods could, and check the driveshaft and u-joints.

how does the mirror vibrate when it shakes? does it go up/down, left/right, or in circles? up/down i think is rear balance/out of round issue, left/right is front (i think), and circles is definitely a driveshaft.

I have a 97 TA with a 2 inch Ibach pro-kit and a 94 Z. I swapped the wheels and tires from the TA to the Z and realized that they wore different...probably because the caster/camber geometry was off. If your tires are stock, take the ones from the back and put them on the front. If that does the trick (or makes the vibration move to the rear), than you have a good idea as to whats going on. Good Luck!
