82 Z/28 Engine question

Rebuilding a 82 Z/28 and would like to know if you had a choice on what size engine to install what would yours be. It came with the factory 302 but pulled it out and found a crack on the block so I want to rebuild and install the bigest size engine possible that will fit under the hood with minor ajustments.
Thanks for any advice you may have.

Re: 82 Z/28 Engine question

I already moved your similar post from "New Member Intro" to 3rd Gen Tech. I think that is where you will have the best chance to get your question answered. Unless you are specifically asking about an LT1 transplant???

my dad had an 82 and put a built 350 in it both carbed and a fuel injected one. Was a fun car. I thought they came with the 305. I am pretty certain ive seen some pics of a big block in one but id lean to a built smallblock and possibly stroked.

on the home page scroll down and you will see ls1 then lt1 and under it would be for your car. The lt1 would be a consideration but I would start by considering what your goals and budget is.

Re: 82 Z/28 Engine question

I would skip any LS1 and go with a LS3 and far as how much you can stuff into that engine bay, I seen 454s in there. I would go with the easy swap stuff gen 3 LT1 with a good forged bottom end and nice valve train components.

Re: 82 Z/28 Engine question

You have to tell us what you are trying to accomplish, and what your budget is, before there can be a meaningful response, as Slick 1 pointed out.

Is this a street car, a track car, or a combination of both? How fast do you want to go? In a straight line, 1/4-mile at a time, or going around a road course? Do you want the engine to fit within the confines of the 3rd Gen stock hood? Are you thinking all motor or a power adder (forced induction, nitrous)? Do you prefer a carb, or electronic fuel injection?

The answer can range anywhere from "replace the 305 with a stock L98 350 out of a 3rd Gen" to "pick up a Sonny's 1005ci (2,150HP NA) and go nuts - some chassis modifications required".

Re: 82 Z/28 Engine question

I would like to thank you for your stright forward advise, so here is where I stand. As I have a decent paying job and at home for a week every month, would like to start from the core and work my way up to a bad *** street car for now. As I mentioned, putting together the most hp powertrain that will fit under the hood with out(for now) modifications having to be made. Will need advise on the following:
Engine core's
Crank's
Cam's
Piston's
Rod's
Head's
Carb's or Fuel Injection
Fuel pump
Oil ect.
Have a shop in my backyard for this expensive hobby but getting together with my 21 yr old son on this project is worth every cent.
Again thanks

Re: 82 Z/28 Engine question

Leaning towards a sb 350 and getting it up to a 383 stroker. Your thoughts on this would be great
Thanks Guys

Re: 82 Z/28 Engine question

And to clarify - you mean a "Gen 1" SBC 350, as was installed in the 3rd Gen F-bodies?

Re: 82 Z/28 Engine question

Let me clarify. I have a 82 Z/28 that came with a 302, the block was cracked so I decided to go for the most HP I could put under the hood with out any major modification. Undecided but leaning towards a sb 350 block and building it up to a 383 via a strocker kit. But here is where I do need advice as to what's the best route to take. As in crank, cam, piston, heads, exhaust ect. The end result would hopefully be "One Bad *** Street Ride" Your advice and guidence is appriciated.
Thanks

Re: 82 Z/28 Engine question

Stock hood is a real limiting factor. From a carburated standpoint, you would sacrifice a lot of power with the intake needed to fit under the stock hood. Your only choice would realy be the standard Edelbrock perfomer which is for near stock to mild builds.

Fuel injection gives you more options. A modified TPI setup would fit and so would a miniram setup. You would need to also stick with a standard deck hight block. No tall deck aftermarket blocks would fit under the hood i believe with even a fuel injected setup.

Do you have a horsepower goal? As stated above, "Bad *** Street Ride" is really not much to go on.

My druthers, money no object would be an aftermarket standard deck small block (Dart little M) with atleast 427CI with some 23degree CNC ported aftermarket heads, matching hydraulic roller cam and an EFI manifold that will fit under the stock hood.

With that kind of money into a project, why not put a small cowl induction hood on it and not put such a limitation on yourself?
