700r4

Ok I have a chance to get a built 700R4. I have a 96 Z. Will this just be a bolt in?? Or will there be some kind of modding involved? Cause I heard this trans will hold some power and will outlast a 4l60E. Plus it helps that I know the guy that's building/owns the shop.

I was going to put a 700R4 in mine but I didnt think it was worth the trouble of trying to get the converter to lockup and getting the speedo working right. And the TV cable too. The 4L60E can be built the same as the 700R4 (Same hard parts)

There are some modifications involved. You'll need a '93 style throttle body, because '94-up don't have throttle valve cable provisions. You'll need a throttle valve (TV) cable from a '93 Z, you'll need to rewire your harness to make the lockup (TCC) function properly...
Oh hell...Why are we doing this again? The 700 and 4L60E are identical internally. One can take just as much abuse as the other.
For further info about how a 4L60E can work (If properly built) ask Dirk (RACINLT1). He went (3) 11.0's last night with a 4L60E I built him over 2 years ago....Spraying 175 shot of NX through it. His trans. probably has around 200 quarter mile passes on it since then. This transmission has spent most of it's life in the low 11 second zone.
Do it right...Have the 4L60E rebuilt.

the reason I was going to go with the 700R4 was because my car dont want to shift when it pulls good 60ft times.

what do you recomend for that problem I have tried tunning. I am having my trans rebuilt this week and going to up the stall to 3200 most and going to try a trick derrick red told me.

Dirk has done all his shift timing/tuning through LT1EDIT. You might want to asak him about the shift timing issues. I do know it ran 11.0 in drive.

he has a switch to make it full manual vavle body so to speak. flip the switch and you have to shift it yourself and if you have it in D it will be in 3rd and take off in that gear. turn off the car flip the switch off and its back to normal.

700r4

I have an `86 built 700r4 on my `95 LT1. I've had this combo for 2 years and happy. reason for this was because it was a conversion project. My project was a good candidate for a 700r4 because I don't have a stock ECM/wiring. I have a harness that doesn't include a VSS or any sort of ECM tranny controls. I'm not sure how easy it would be to try and rid the computer of trying to control the tranny if it's currently an automatic and throwing an error code. You have to do something about the VSS. Many options are out there. I actually got a "conversion" VSS brand new from www.johnscars.com specifically for this style 700r4 and for potential use for the `95 ECM/wiring for a manual z28. I now just use the VSS for my electric speedo. The VSS alone is worth a good deal of research. The hard lines, as in the TV cable are a worry also. I bought a Lokar 700r4 stainless braided TV cable and their throttle body TV/Throttle bracket specifically for retrofitting 700r4s on LT1s. each part was around $40 each. Only problem was that the throttle bracket will work only with their throttle cable. I ended up getting their throttle cable as well to complete it. Other than that, it's almost a direct bolt on. The install turned out very nice. The shift linkadge is completely custom so I would be somewhat concerned if you currently have a manual. I would also be concerned in the first place if you were trying to convert from a manual to even a well built up 700r4. Anyways, just a few notes.

I agree with 12SCNDZ why go to all the trouble when the 4L60E can be built to take it.
And not that expensive either, I had a local guy with an outstanding reputation for building these trannies do mine, I paid 750 carryout. No converter, I took the tranny out and gave it to him he built it and gave it back and I installed it.
I put a TCI converter in and so far I am damn impressed.
Anyway, I just don,t want to see you get into all this modification and hassle if you don,t need too.
