At the point that you are ordering rocker arms IMO. The rockers cost the same for either size stud so the only difference is the cost of the studs, not that much.

 

Im going to 1.7 rr and 7/16 studs at the same time......so if your upgrading your rockers you might as well do the studs as well.

 

if you go with 7/16th what do u have to change in the block? do they screw into the stock 3/8th holes? if they did when i get my new springs and RR's and stuff i will be changing over to 7/16th just for the hell of it.

 

Shoot, I don't even have a cam, or heads done, and I went with 7/16" studs. I was changing to 1.6 Roller Rockers, and it just makes sense to spend another $35 and get stronger, more durable parts. I feel pretty comfortable that my valvetrain can take some abuse now. I also went with the Non Self Aligning (NSA) rockers, and GM guideplates.

The holes in the heads are 7/16", so you don't need to make any changes to the heads regardless of what size stud you go with. Both the 3/8" and 7/16" studs use 7/16" threads on the part that threads into the heads.

Read the original post of this thread, and went right to this (my) post. For all I know, this same answer was posted 3X already. But then again, guess I don't think like the majority....in any 'field'. :clear throat: Anyway, when do ya go to 7/16" stud.... Cuz the larger stud has more flexing resistance, the decision will depend on the supporting cast (springs especially) and to what degree they tax that rigidity. AFAIK, there is no magic formula or parts criteria by which to emphatically state when it becomes necessary. So, here is a test (one that I endorse) that can can be used to determine the time. Take the assembly you intend to use (or will use in the future) install on the engine, and turn engine over by hand, with an indicator on the side of the existing rocker stud. If one sees .03" defection of the stud, consider it time to upgrade.

You'll get that with a wimpy 130 lbs (seat) springs. I'd go larger if I saw .010, but that's just me.

OS's point in regards to rocker arms shouldn't be overlooked either.

I agree. Possible to have a whole lotta flexing going on. Maybe better then, to hold to a certain percentage of gross lift, that lost due to deflection, in lieu of focusing strictly on one item.

BTW, the decision to go right to the end, was a time based issue. Wasn't intended to belittle or lessen quality of anyone's post prior to mine. Or, heaven forbid, think mine was any more important.
