503 cam install

Im getting ready to install the 503. I just recently installed crane 1.6 sa rr, and lt4 springs. Im looking to get some new springs with the cam, and was wondering if there is a set out there that would work, but is cheaper than the 918s. Also wondering if I need new retainers, if so what kind, and pushrods, also what kind. (ive got 130000 miles) Thanks

Crane makes a good spring kit that is popular on here. It's cheaper than 918's and stouter than those LT4 springs. I'm too lazy to do a search right now, but I'm sure it's in this forum and on Summit. (10308-1 maybe???)

You need to get chromemoly pushrods. Stock length should be fine for you. There are plenty of brands that make them, just stay with a major one and you'll be fine.

Yup that is the crane 10308-16 kit. Good to .660" lift. It is a double spring kit and will work well with the CC503.

I suggest buying the $10 tool and checking the pushrod legnth then getting the right ones. Do it right, do it once.

Just make sure you get the kit for an LT1 engine as they have special retainers for the SA style rockers. They also make a kit for non-SA rockers (what i'm using).

I am renting a shop with a lift for the cam install, so I need to order everything before I start working, so I dnt know if I will be able to measure the pushrod length before I order them. Is there anyone that has a similar setup that could tell what worked for them, or any ideas as to what size I should use. I know stock is around 7.195.Is that what I shld get? Also cld I maybe start with a longer set, and grind them till they fit. Sorry about all the questions, ive never done this before and I dont have the time, or funds to screw up. Thanks for your responses

Grinding the pushrods would be out of the question. I'd recommend getting a length checker as well, and then driving to a local speed shop to get the right size... or order several sizes and hope one works, return the rest?

Stock pushrod legnth is 7.200, the correct size will be dependant on your; deck height, head gasket thickness, wether the heads have be resurface and if so how much, rocker design, vavle stem height, lifters being used, cam, and wether the block has been align bored. (they may be more factors I forgot)
No, you can't just grind them shorter.

If your motor has never been touched and you are sure of that, get the 7.2" pushrods and call it a day.

The only thing that will be changed is the springs and cam. I already have the rockers on the engine w/ the stock pushrods.

New pushrods may sound like overkill, but I think they should be considered a necessity. If you must get the hardened ones, fine, but I think most would agree in recommending that you get some chromemoly ones.
