5 Opti's in less than a year!!!!!

A friend of mine has a 95 M6 Z28 and has replaced the opti five times in less than a year. It appears as though the rotor is walking out toward the cap and has disintegrated. It rubs the ridges off the cap and seperates the metal part from the rotor. There is no play in the opti nor does the cam appear to be walking...Any suggestions?

He just bought a new Accel and it lasted two weeks. He's pulling it as I type this.

Thanks for the response

2 things come to mind:
Make sure the cam dowel pin isn't too long..
Make sure the proper venting hoses/harness are used, [the harness has a restrictor in it], not full manifold vacuum to the opti..

That's all I know right now.

I'm studying this vacuum thing. I'll get in touch with him tomorrow and try to work on that. I'll try to get some pics of the damaged Opti's....he saved them all.

This is what I was thinking too. 95 uses a long dowel pin cam. It's possible he has been usisng the pre-95 opti.

They aren't interchangable at all.

You did not indicate any mods, but if he has an aftermarket cam, chances are the dowel pin is too long. That will push the drive and rotor into the cap.

You would think after number 2 he would have ground it down even if he doesn't know how long it should be.
