5 grand to spend.

So my bolt on Z has stayed just that for a few years now and its time for a winter project. I have 5 grand to play with. A buddy will be helping to all the work so labor is no cost. Misc parts like gaskets/tools etc will all be 20% off cause of my job. I'm thinking of doing the LE3/clutch/4.10's and call it quits till i have enough for a rebuild/blower. Should the 5 grand cover it? I will have a little more to through around once taxes come back but thats the number i'd like to stick with.

why throwdown $5k on a setup you don't even plan on keeping?

I'm sure you couldn't build up a budget shortblock (forged piston/stock crank, lower comp 355) and get a used s/c kit in your budget

You'll probably push the 5K limit, an LE3 setup done with all the supporting mods, a good clutch, and gears along with a professional setup will probably push you over.

Point is most times you don't need that much rear. A beefed up 10 will work just fine.

Like my friend who went through a handful of factory rears on his mild head/cammed LS1 before finally stepping up to a aftermarket 9". He didn't have sticky tires either, just street tires and an automatic tranny.

I am on my 3rd ten bolt and broke the other two going mid 13's on BFG drag radials. Anything could happen.

you'll also need pistons for those LE3 heads, your factory valve reliefs aren't big enough

With an le3 setup, if your gonna slack on the rearend, you might as well leave it in the garage.

???? First I have heard of that. Can anyone verify this?

Steve - Heads/cam parts alone will run you ~ $2000 ... add in other stuff like new timing chain, large injectors, tune... you may need a new clutch to if its the stocker. You'll be way under $5000.

yea i'll def get a new clutch. I'm toying with the idea, I want a street bike pretty bad but want to get the numbers up on the car since its sat for so long. If it doesnt get done because of the budget its no big deal, I have barely driven the car this summer.

just the heads and cam are going to cost 2k if you go le2/3. then port the intake manifold ~400. 58mm tb~400, 36lbs injectors ~300, intank 255 fuel pump ~125, heavy duty timing chain~300, dyno tune~400. Your not thinking of all the costs, do you even have long tube headers?
then once you throw a rod reving the thing to 6800rpms your down another 3-4k depending on parts and labor. Then throw in a 12 bolt or 9 inch rear 2200.
As for those who think the 10 bolt needs beefing up~ put in a 4.10 gear, dr's and a 6spd. Theres no way you will see more than 20-30 passes, especially if your dropping the clutch at 4500rpms. On a a4 you may be okay, but sooner or later its going to go too. People forget chevy was putting our same rear in 4cyl S10 trucks.

I am thinking of all the cost. I also do not drag race my car. Its a nice weather car only. Goes out maybe 4-5 times a month during the spring/summer. I realize the cost. I have all the bolt ons already. The car is far far from beat on and the numbers are simple for bragging rights. I have owned my car for 4 years and it has not once seen the track.

a 255lph pump is not required on a h/c car
a HD timing chain is not required either, many people are in the 4-500hp range with OEM style chains
you don't need a 58mm throttle body either

For piece of mind sake, I'd replcae the timing chain since its coming off for the cam install.
