45 mph in 5th
45 mph in 5th
I'll be puttzin along on a two lane highway stuck behind someone who is going kinda slow. I will be in 5th gear around 45 mph, and then all of the sudden my check engine light will come on. I will get a code 32. It seems like it happens all the time if I go to slow in 5th gear. Is my egr bad, and has anyone else experienced this.
Oh by the way its a 94z28 w 101,000 on the odometer.

Re: 45 mph in 5th
this happens to me as well, also my high speed fans would be stuck on when that happend so my car would run really cool. only in 5th gear if I spend maybe 30 seconds going 40-50 mph without really changing the throttle position
Re: 45 mph in 5th
45 in 5th gear is right around when your EGR cycles on/off right? probably just aggravates the problem. I still don't know why my fans would stick on cuz code 32 is the only one that was thrown the last time i tuned my car. I'm just gonna delete it from my comp anyways...
hm no EGR on my car is set from 900-2100 rpm, so I guess when you sit in that rpm range for awhile and ur egr ain't workin, it throws a code, it just takes a min or so. haha obd1 sucks so bad, I drove around with no o2 sensors and it took my comp 12.7 miles of driving to turn the SES light on.

Re: 45 mph in 5th
your fans staying on would not supercool the car. the thermostat would close again and let it heat up. even if it did not close, the fans' cooling ability becomes useless once you rreach 40 mph or so.
Re: 45 mph in 5th
So is this just a clitch in the computer. Because all I have around me is 2 lane highways, maybe I just need to put it in 4th and stop conserving that precious gas.. Whats the verdict is there a fix for this or not..

I would consider running 170 degrees or less to be super cool for a modern engine. obviously the thermostat closes up, but it will just open again once it gains a few degrees, and both fans being on high speed will pretty much hold the car there. if you read my post, that's what I was complaining about.
i was just saying that at the same time this code gets thrown, my fans stay on high speed until I turn the car off for 10 min or so, then all it back to normal.
Re: 45 mph in 5th
shoebox,
I had it on a gm tech scanner last summer, and it showed egr was dirty or speratic. But I was not throwing a code. Is it possible maybe the pindle is sticking and just clean it out.
I have a lt1 scanner what should I watch for on it. I can pretty much kick it on at that speed..

Re: 45 mph in 5th
You need to check the diaphragm to see if it holds vacuum and probably need to remove it to check for pintle closure and debris in the orifices. You can also test to be sure there actually is vacuum being applied to the valve when the solenoid is operated.
Re: 45 mph in 5th
The reason the code sets under low RPM cruise at low engine loads ("puttzin") is because that's the only time the PCM can run the EGR diagnostic test. The throttle needs to be between 5%-20%, change in throttle during the diagnostic test period can not be more than 1%, MAP must be between 20-60kPa, and stabilized both before and after the diagnostic test.
When the PCM runs the test, all it does it look for a certain change in MAP when it cycles the EGR valve. If it sees the required change, no code. If it doesn't see the required change in MAP it sets DTC 32. That indicates that the EGR flow is not as great as it is supposed to be.
Causes could include:
-EGR faulty
-EGR solenoid not opening or closing
-EGR vacuum lines loose
-EGR pintle or manifold openings plugged
-Inadequate exhaust system backpressure
You need to systematically eliminate each of those possibilities, although there's not much you can do if you have a highly efficient exhaust system.
