Red face 4 bolt main questions...

I was curious if anyone happened to have a picture of their 4 bolt main block and what actually makes it a 4 bolt main. If you could describe in the picture what makes it a 4 bolt I would appreciate it. I am trying to figure out if I have a 4 bolt or a 2 bolt.

Thanks.

However, when I disconnected the main caps and the rods etc there were only 2 bolts holding them in, so I assume I have a 2 bolt?

Here is a picture of what mine looks like.

Not exactly. A new set of caps, and drill six angle holes (2 extra holes on the 3 main caps that get replaced) for the splayed bolts to go into. You should align bore after you put in the new caps, but you're gonna do that anyway on a high-po motor. So it's actually no big deal.

You can also buy steel 4-bolt front caps and billet rear caps.

Re: 4 bolt main questions...

A friend of mine got splayed main caps installed and it costed around 500 for the machine work and another 300 for the caps/bolts, so your lookin at around 700-800, it's not cheap.

Re: 4 bolt main questions...

Thanks for the info guys. I think I will just stick with my 2 bolt and hope the forged internals hold.

I believe my labor costs were half of that to do the 4 bolt splayed. $500 for labor sounds high... My caps were Oliver and were a little over $200 (if my memory serves me right!). Sounds like he overpaid. Maybe some other guys can chime in on what they paid for the splayed 4 bolt conversion?

Re: 4 bolt main questions...

ProGram caps were around $230 if I recall. Labor was only a couple hours. I'd say $400-450 total.

My Milodon splayed caps and machining for them was 500.00. You can view my shortblock here:

Diffinitly worth the cash if you are going high hp or considering it down the road.

That is almost 400 dollars in machine labor.
