4.88 Gears

Ok so ive been thinking about this for a little bit. Ive been thinking about getting new gears, but from what i hear anything over 373s weaken the rear end.

Ive been thinking that if i get a new rear, might as well go all out. I was toying with the idea of getting 488 gears since i plan on spinning to 6800-7000 rpm. Most people always say that gears kill gas mileage, but even with 488 gears, it would put me around the same cruising rpm as an auto with 342 gears. I know my gas mileage would go down, but what would be the downside of doing this?

The main downside i can see would be shifting into 5th to run a quarter as i would shift out of 4th at 108 mph.

I already have plenty of traction. I have alot of suspension mods and 275 nittos on the back.

Thanks,
Stu

dude, with all the traction you could possibly have with 275 drag radials, i still think that is a lot of torque being multiplied by those rear gears
i would say go 11in on the rears if you want to have a shot at hooking up
also, on the street, ive heard guys say some gears are useless
basically, if you start in 1st, you'll leave tread no matter what
i'd love to see somebody try them though, it sounds insane

the best thing for ya to do is find a tire/gear combo which will put you right above redline in 4th thru the line
edit: im bored so i did some quick calculations for ya
26 inch tire and 4:88's - 111 in 4th at 7000
26 inch tire and 4:56's - 119 in 4th at 7000
27 inch tire and 4:88's - 115 in 4th at 7000
27 inch tire and 4:56's - 123 in 4th at 7000
28 inch tire and 4:88's - 119 in 4th at 7000
28 inch tire and 4:56's - 128 in 4th at 7000

My main reason i wanna try this is because most people are almost scared to go anything over 410s. Ive got a buddy with an old duster with 488s in a 3 speed auto. The thing cruises down the street at 3k rpm at 50 mph.

Im not really TOO worried about going into 5th because i can shift faster than almost anyone ive ever met. I also have a short shifter which makes it easier.

I think the whole thing about spinning on accident sounds like BS to me. I cant even spin the tires at WOT in 1st with my setup right now with 350 rwhp, so the guys must be running some crappy tires to spin them on accident.

edit: Im adding heads, so i should be in the 420-450 rwhp range.

Anyone with experience on anything over 410s ?????

Good to hear. I think with 488s i should be able to beat the A4s out of the box and easily trap over them.

The only thing I would be worried about is shifting hard into 5th. Because 5th and 6th are o/d gears and are both very weak. I just think it might cause tranny probs over time. Good luck with it if you try it, let us know how it turns out!!

You will be shifting an awful lot and have no traction. I doubt you will be happy.

i'd get your heads put on first and see about where shes gonna trap. and then i'd pick a gear to work with my tires that would put me real close to my shift point in 4th if i was you. unless you can climb to the top of 5th before you hit the lights, and like somebody else said od gears are weak/suck for going fast. plus you'd just be wasting time shifting into it. i'd just stick to topping out 4rth but thats just mho
