Question 396 problem. At least I think...HELP!!

I've got this sound coming from the engine on the right side of the block. It doesn't change in or rev or get louder and it doesn't have a rhythm either. What it sounds like exactly is if you were holding a valve in each hand and tapped them together that's exactly what it sounds like. I don't have a loss in power, fuel consumption, oil consumtion etc. ....but it's driving the hell out of me as to what it is. I didn't start when I had the engine built initially but I ran it hard a couple of times at the track very hard w/ about 4K miles on her and ever since I hear this ting type sound.

Could it be from the headers possibly? It's hard to locate, if you pop the hood and stand over the engine you don't hear it but if you sit next to the passenger wheel you'll hear it and you can hear if you listen carefully inside the car as well.

I almost tempted to tear the heads off and take a look but since it isn't showing a loss in performance I'm kinda leary in doing it. Maybe I'll pop the valve covers off and see whats up.

Any ideas or suggestions?

You probably need to get a more accurate idea of where the noise is coming from. Otherwise we're just guessing. A piece of rubber hosehose against your ear makes a great microphone for this sort of thing.

Poping the valve covers off is a good start. Also does it make the noise all the time or just specific times?

It's all the time. But like I said it has no rythm whatsoever. I'll be taking it some place to get someone's opinion of it shortly. I'll post whatever they find out. Thanks Somoa7

Humm, very strange. Does the noise go away if you press the clutch in (if its a 6 speed)? Occasionally mine will make a rattleing noise at idle that goes away as soon as I press the clutch in. I am assuming its the throwout bearing.

Also my longtubes seemed to make all of the valvetrain noises much louder. However, they pretty much followed engine RPM unlike your car.

Good Luck!

Nope it's not tranny related at all. It's definetly coming from the block or heads, valvetrain. Does increase in noise w/ engine speed either or get louder as the rpms climb. It's very unusual to say the least. Don't know if it has anything to do the w/ the rev-kit but I'll be taking a look soon. Changed weight in oil to see if it would shut up and it's still there. Don't know what to make of it......
