396 as apposed to a 383? any drawbacks?

Both require block clearancing and oil pan. both cranks cost the same right?

any issue with reliability at high rpms? just need some pros/cons of each route. I know musser had the 401 which is the 3.875 stroke and revved to 7k.

thanks

Generally a crank for a 396 will be more than 383, considerably so in some applications. You can also use your stock oil pan for a 383, myself and a majority of the board have.

IMO a 396 really isnt worth all the extra money that could be spent. The extra spent would be better placed into the heads.

Drawbacks to a 396 over a 383: Cost

Scat cast 9000 series cranks are very at about $300. Problem is that the only cranks made for a 396 are forged and really start costing some serious money.

Yes, forged 396 cranks cost more than cast 383 cranks, but when forged they cost the same. The only draw back I see is that their aren't as many of the shelf piston choices, especially if your going with a 5.85 rod.

from what I've been told by several engine builders a 396 is not as durable and the rod angle isn't as good as a 383 and piston wall scuffing is a problem?
I've actually been told by some sponsors on this board that they wouldn't build one for themselves but they do because thats what their customer wants?????

John Hunkins ran a 396 in Thunderchicken for like 50k and when they opened up the motor it looked real good.
I would build a 355 myself but that is just me.

how much does a 383 cost?

like if i were to drive my car into a reliable shop, drop off the keys and say i want a working, 383 stroker in 2 weeks, (or whatever amount of time)

how much $$$ am i looking at?

Depends on the shop but I would say between 6 and 7 grand.
And that is probably on the low side.

How soon you looking to build your stroker? I'm getting ready to piece mine out w/in the next 2 months. Lunati forged crank 3.875, Ross custom forged pistons 10.8:1, and 5.85 lunati pro rods forged. Only have 6k on the parts this is for a 396.

If you go with a all forged bottom end it's going to be pretty hard not to spend around $4300 on the short block with splayed 4 bolt mains.
Figure another $2,000 for heads, a $1,000 for cam, timing chain and valve train. Depends what the shop charges for the install.
I've been quoted $600-$1500. You can spend $9000-$10,000 pretty easy.
This is n't counting things like throttlebody, injectors, headers, and are you going to replace the opti & waterpump while you have the engine out?

Depends on your budget. Combination motorsports sells a street/strip 355 short block for about $3000 that comes with forged rods, forged pistons, cam, timing chain.

I would think it would be pretty hard to get a stroker done in two weeks unless you bought a shortblock from someone in advance and the heads too. I've heard several stories of guys waiting 4-6 months to get heads back

I too would go 355, its just cheaper and easier to build. Reliability is with the 355, and with a good heads/cam 355 400rwhp is not a major problem. I spent as much on my forged 355 crank as a 383.

neighbors who are avid racers are building me a short block for half the price of what combo wanted. hell combo wanted 800 to put the heads and intake on teh block!

Remeber, quality costs money and you get what you pay for. High prices usually reflect quality, at least when machining is involved.
