383 Stroker

Ok, i am looking to turn my stock Lt1 into the most badass of badasses. A 383 Stroker. At first i just wanna stick to Sequential FI, then possibly go with a forced induction setup. I have been looking to do this for some time. I have done a little bit of research and now i am wondering what you guys think? I found a couple kits, but i wanna know from you guys who have done this already. What is best for the $ i have about 1500 with machine work. What rods, and cam size should i go? should i get head work done at first? What is needed to get her on the road? Thanks, Stroke
P.S.
What you guys think of this kit?

LT1 specific tech questions should be posted on "LT1 Tech".... yes its a stroker, but they are really becoming fairly routine. If you are "forced induction" specific, you might want to also post on the "Forced Induction" board.

Moving to "LT1 Tech"....

You also might want to define you goals a little more clearly, in terms of available budget, is it a "street car", do you have to worry about emissions, what is your definition of "most badass...."? There are 1,200HP blown LT1's out there.

yes, it is going to be a street car. No i do not have to worry about emissions, due to a friend in the bussiness. I would like to hit somewhere around 400+ RWHP i am told it is very possible and i would like to prove it as so. as far as the budget, i have 1500 for cam, rods, pistons, rings (preferably a kit) getting the motor machined and other costs that i incure. I am just looking to get opinions, can it be done for this much? has anyone done it? What should i be looking out for? (so i don't mess up) things like that.
and "most badass" on the weekend warrior aspect of it. I would like to hit the 12's if possible. Can i do it? Thanks, Stroke

I am not real familiar with the low budget LT1 stuff. But if you have $1,500 to spend and want more performance you are far better off spending it on heads and valvetrain along with a set of headers than on a stroker kit.

you are the second person who has told me that, so i am thinking that i might just go that way...any good recomendation on heads? Or should i just send mine to the machine shop and get them ported? what else should i have done to them? I am planning on gearing the *** end down to 3:73 and then replacing OEM Cam with a Monster and changing my current exhaust to a 3" full. What else should i do? Tahnks, Stroke

There are a couple of people on the board with excellent reputations for head porting. Lloyd Elliot and Phil (sorry I don't know his last name) aka Skarodom are two that come to mind. Do a search and you will find a lot of information. With a decent heads and cam/valvetrain combo plus headers you should see close to 400rwhp with a stock shortblock. Obviously, it should be in good shape beofre doing top end mods. I suggest doing a leakdown test to be sure you don't need to spend the money on a lower end rebuild before investing in the heads and cam package.

thanks man, i think i am going to go ahead and pull the motor down, do all my bottom end work (cause i am at 160k on stock OEM internals, but it was taken GRETA care of not one ioda of blow-by) then go ahead and get the heads done and a nice HUGE cam. Thanks man.

Just thought I'd add my unwanted opinion too

If you have 1500 bucks to spend on both parts AND machine work, then 1500 simply isn't going to make it. I just got done with my 383 build, and I spent just shy of that for machine and block prep alone. Like Rich Krause said, spend it where it will count the most. I would budget for the best heads you can put together, and don't worry about the exotic stuff (titanuim retainers, roller rockers, etc..) until your budget allows. Oh, and when you pick the cam, call the cam manufacturer and have them help with the decision. They are pretty damn good at what they do if they have all the info about the motor and your realistic about what you plan to do with it. A "huge cam" is wont work as well as a smaller better MATCHED cam if you don't have the right heads and exhaust. Bigger isn't always better when it comes to power production..

12's shouldn't be a problem at ALL for 1500 bucks. If done right, it will be low 12's.

Anyhows, Good luck with it!
