355 shortblock cost$$$$
1200? depends what you mean by forged, you want everything forged? what kinda quality? im doing a similar setup, and ill have over 3k in it. a good crank is going to be at least 700. good pistons, another 700+. machine work, mine cost is 1100 for all machine work, but thats a decent price
I want it to be strong enough to be able to handle forced induction later if I decide to do that. But idk what I'm planning so i'm not going to build it for forced induction just a strong compression motor.
I thought it was reasonably priced, but I havent put the motor back in yet to see how it runs.
Well you should make up your mind before building the engine because pistons and ring gap and other stuff are going to be different between a blower engine and a NA engine, so if you build it for a blower than don't go forced induction on it, it may end up being a dog, and if you build it for NA and go with a blower later, it isn't going to be set up right. you need to decide what you are going to do with it.
i know.... i want it to handle a blower but what if i dont get around to putting one on??? the way i look at it is you can put a blower on a stock motor so cant you just add it to a build N/A motor and just not get as much performance out of the blower??? correct me if im wrong because i really dont know.
I am paying 2450 for a 357, TRW forged pistons, scat I beams, new stock crank, ARP main studs, balanced, hotank, hone, freeze plugs, bearings, moly rings, , Etc, etc, everything.
My stock crank would need to be taken 30 thou over just to get the grooves out. My shortblock also had to be bored t 40 over, things were bad down there.
I am supplying the canton pan and melling pump (10554) thats it. Everything thing else is in the price. I brought it to him assembled and will pickup the shortblock assembled.
I am very happy with what i am paying for the quality of the shop. I am not going boost but the ring will be gap with be for a 175 shot.

There is no single answer to this question. The reasonable range is going to be ~$2,500 to $7,500+. You have to decide what you are building and what your budget is. Remember - the power comes largely from the top end. If you are on a tight budget, look there first.
For example, you can spend over $2,000 on block prep, and it would be worth it if you were building a max effort engine.
