306 cam users?
Re: 306 cam users?
That use to be the "big" cam back in like the late 90s all the LT1 guys ran, if you wanted a 400rwhp H/c car that was it. But I see a lot better custom grinds making more power now a days, tal to Brett Baur or Futral
Re: 306 cam users?
Im shocked to see so much negative feed back on the 306 cam. I have a 306 in a totally stock motor other than a few bolt-ons and Long tubes and I love it. I drive my car everyday rain, snow or shine. Idles in traffic at 170-180 degrees around 1000rpm with good brakes, gets 18-22mpg and runs decent e/ts with 3.23s in the rear. My friend also is running the 306 in a stock motor with bolt-ons and long tubes. His is an auto compaired to my t56 and with his 3200 stall and 3.73s it runs great too. Never any driveability issures out of either car and the cams have been in both of them for over 2 years. His runs 12.4s@110 with 1.7 60'sand mine has ran a best of 12.7@112 with 2.0 60's so they make decent power for cam only cars. Just figured Id add my 2 cents to the thread.

Re: 306 cam users?
The CC306 is just a old design and it's pretty flexible to any setup since it has way too much exhaust duration, that makes it really forgiving. You can make huge improvements over the CC306 in terms of power, torque and drivability. It was the old school choice, but it's far from optimum.

Re: 306 cam users?
Bret, Ive been considering changeing from the 306 when I freshen up my short block. Just for the fact that "everyone" I know has the 306........because I installed them
I belive Ill get with you as soon as I do and see what you recommend for me.

Re: 306 cam users?
seem like a lot of variations on the 306. I know i'm not going to wuss-out if i doesnt ride like it cam from the factory like this(w/ 306). I do have Hooker LT, 30* injector,1.6RRs,918 springs,58mm tb,andPCMforless to make it harmonize. With a T56 and stock gears i'm going for the install.

Re: 306 cam users?
The CC306 leaves a lot on the table. Just never really cared for that cam.
It always surprises me when people talk about drivability, yet never mention anything about the car's weight, gearing, transmission or state of tune. That 306 is a lot worse cam in an Impala than it is in a gutted 6-spd f-body.
Good to know that you guys have a lot better options. Actually, Comp had better cam grinds in their catalog when the CC306 came out. They just weren't LT1-core cams..... but they could grind em' if you wanted.

Re: 306 cam users?
Well in my post I did mention gearing and my car is an all power option hard top car. With the front sway bar removed (going back on as soon as my vette wheels get here) and drag lites it weighed 3310lbs. My friends car that I also talked about is a hard top like mine with manual everything, no cruise control, rear window defroster or sway bar. Its as close to a 1LE as you can get without having a 1LE. His weighed 3150 with the stock salid shooters. Im running 3.23s with a T56 (thought it was a 2.97first gear trans when i bought it) and it idles at 1000rpm. My friend is running 3.73s with a 3200 stall and an auto, it idles at around 700rpm. Both are regularly driven cars. His has 96,000 miles on it and over 25,000 miles on it AFTER the cam install and mine has 136,000 on it and over 35,000 of those were AFTER the cam install. Both have a mild street/strip tune. Not sure on the specifics but a knowledgable friend tuned both cars for mainly street duty. Hope that sheds some more light on these 2 examples.

Re: 306 cam users?
You bastages I was all set to get a 306 and lately it has taken a lot of bashing...you people make this so hard...
... ok if the 306 is outdated what is a good "new" alternative for a stock bottom end car with mild heads or stock and all the bolt-ons....and if someone could say why that would be great...

Re: 306 cam users?
I ran a "tweaked" 306 cam (stock heads), aka the "GTP6" cam. I was full weight, stock gears. I tuned, tuned, and tuned some more. Probably flashed the PCM 40 times. I got it to be pretty dialed in. Still had some surge but was driveable. I daily drove it for ~35k miles.
I think there are lots of better driver choices out there, but I believe that personal tuning can make a large difference.
Tuning is huge, but so is the combo. I put a ~250/260 solid roller in my car (more compression, heads, cubes, and gears) and it drives much better than the 306 ever did. The biggest difference for me was the gear swap. It really killed the surge.

Ryan's findings with his CC306 combo and switching to the even larger solid roller kind of goes along with what I was trying to say. Tuning and setup play a bigger part in it than most people realize.
Not everyone wants a short duration cam and on the same note, not everyone wants a large one. I don't see it as "right" and "wrong" as alot of other people do because I understand that people are all different in their tastes. Comes with age I guess.

Re: 306 cam users?
One last thing to add...
These custom cams from Bret and Joe O coupled with their respective head guys should not be thought of as "set it and forget it," in regards to tuning. You could probably install these cams with a generic tune and be satisfied, but you could likely tweak and tweak to really get these combos flying and driving smoooooooth. Every car is different - They really are.
I had several copilots holding the laptop while I yelled at them to write down the rpm and MAP reading when I felt the surge. Definitely not something you ask your significant other to aid in
