30 or 33 spline axles for 12 bolt..

Which is needed or sufficient when ordering a 12 bolt? I really know nothing more than the 33 spline is stronger but also heavier.

What is a good reccomendation and what is the stock spline?

If the cost isn't any more, I would go with the 33 spline.

For what reason? Just reassurance?

Yup. Might as well go with the big stuff if you can. You never know what mods the future will bring.

The 33 spline is probably overkill for your current application. Yes, the 33spline axles are heavier. But the big problem with them is that it requires a custom differential (posi). Standard GM 12-bolt stuff is based on a 31-spline axle. I have 33-spline, but I would recommend you get 31.

The bigger the axle, the weaker your diff because of the increased material removed to fit the larger axle...and I've heard of a lot more broken diffs than bent 30 or 31 spline axles. I did 30s on my Moser and haven't had any problems (though I'm not putting down that much power). If I hurt an axle, I'll do the JordonMusser trick of getting bigger axles and having them machined on the ends to fit my 30 spline diff

Thanks Rich, I was hoping you'd respond to this. I was thinking 31 spline from what I read but I wasnt sure. I know you asked a question a while back about it but I couldnt find it.

If I have any more questions Ill email or PM you, thanks.

moser has a great calculator on their website somewhere. Be forewarned, i think it gives a 200% "safety factor" so if you are on the border, you can "come down" a bit
