3 simple questions I need answered.
1. I have 103,000 miles on my 94 Z28. Do I still need to use premium gasoline? What happens if I don't?
2. I want to buy a K&N CAI because I've heard it compliments a flowmaster. Is it easy for someone who knows nothing about cars to install?
3. (maybe not so simple) When I am in very slow moving traffic my car tends to overheat unless I turn on my A/C and the fan kicks in. I have plenty of coolant. Is this normal or do I have a problem?

well as for the gas i have a 115000 on the z28 and we still run 93 octane but a friend has a 95 TA (stock and he only uses 87) but i would still use 93
the K&N is very simple and anyone who can follow directions can do it.
as for the third it sounds like the fans arent coming on so i would go have someone check their continuity (their power) and see if they are still workin

1. It is definitely a good idea to run premium still. Ur engine will run a lot smoother and cleaner, especially at high mileage.
2. K&N CAI is the simplest mod u can possibly do on the car. Assembly is incredibly easy and won't take u more than a half hour.
3. It is normal for the car to overheat at idle. One solution is to go with a 160 degree thermostat (also an easy installation) and program ur fans to turn on earlier

My shot:
1. You can use whatever grade of gas that does not ping.
2. The K&N does not really match any other particular brand of part, but opening up the intake tract and exhaust are usually the first things the car can benefit from. Install should not be hard.
3. Define what you call overheating. The stock fans do not come on until 226º and that is past the middle of the gauge. If it is getting up to that point and dropping back before you are moving again, your fans are working normally and your car is not overheating.

Thanks for your replies. I will continue to use premium gas and it sounds like the CAI will be easy.
As for the overheating, when I am idle for some time or in very slow traffic, it does go way past the half way mark unless I turn on the A/C. Once the A/C is on, it runs at normal temperatures.

IMHO, I don't see any grade of gasoline burning any cleaner than another.
I guess you should test to see if the fans will actually kick on without you turning on the a/c. It should not get to the red zone before they kick on. If they do not start on their own, you may have a problem with the temp sensor in the water pump. It is the one that send temp info to the pcm. The gauge uses a different sensor in the driver side head.
Thanks again for all of your help. I will do some testing on the fans to make sure they are coming on.
I do need clarification on the K&N CAI. Is the FIPK the same thing as the CAI? I believe the K&N part number is 57-3010-1 and costs around $200.
I'm just making sure they are the same thing.

Depends on what you mean by knowing nothing....when I got my TA a year ago I knew NOTHING....a friend of mine helped me install my CAI and Flowmasters on the same day....I prolly woudn't have done it without him. However I didn't know about this board. If I had been on this voard and knew about it, I would've done it on my own. If you have a question post it and it'll usually be answered very shortly.
1. Premium gas is good!
2. I have the FlowMaster exhaust and a CAI. But, I went with a Moroso CAI instead of the K&N. The HP gain is the same and the two systems are almost identical, but the Moroso is cheaper by about $30 or $40.
3. I had the same problem with my car and it turned out to be two bad relay switches. Once I got them replace it solved all my problems.
Jason
(if it doesn't work the first time, pull it out and try it again!)

Where is the best place to buy a Moroso CAI?
Also, to recap everything for my overheating problem. I need to test the fans, check the relay switches, and check the temp. sensor in the water pump.
Is there anything else I should look for? Sounds like starting here will eventually uncover the problem.
