3.8 to LT1 on 96, AC question

I'm in the process of doing the swap right now. I was going ahead and hooking up the ac dryer and noticed that the line from dryer to the firewall wont match up. Its like they both have male ends. Am I doing something wrong or does the 3.8 have a differnt part inside the box on the firewall?

I have this diagram and the one I am trying to hook up is line 19.

Yep, the L36 (3.8L) system looks different in that regard. It does not use an expansion valve like the LT1. The LT1 and L32 (3.4L) are the same (as the diagram shows).

DOH! What does the expansion valve do? Can I get a line made to adapt to it or do I have to swap out the stuff inside the fire wall? I think I aready scrapped all those parts from the donor car.

Maybe an a/c shop can help. One system uses an expansion valve setup and the other uses an orifice tube. I don't know how you convert one to another.

What is the part called that is inside the box? Also what is invovled in changing it? Can it be changed from the engine side or do you have to get under the dash inside?

Thanks for the help.

Re: 3.8 to LT1 on 96, AC question

The rectangular block on the LT1 system is the expansion valve. I don't know if the evaporator (radiator thing inside the box) would need to be changed. I'm not an a/c expert. That is why I suggested some input from a shop.

Re: 3.8 to LT1 on 96, AC question

It appears to be all one piece. I just got an AC delete pulley from Advance Auto. I decided to just leave the AC out for now. From what I read the evaporator can be changed by only removing the PCM, then the top half of the box and then the pass side header. I may put it back on later, but for now I just want to work on getting my engine swap done and getting this car going.

Thanks for the imput.
