Question 3.42's a good choice?

i currently have 2.73 in my car, its an a4...i want some more out of the whole but dont want to ruin gas milage that bad. my buddy has a set of 3.42's he said he is willing to help me swap out, he said all i need is a pinion spacer? and some l/s additive, and a gasket and said i will be very satisfied with the 3.42's.

do you think there will be a noticeable difference with the 3.42's over the 2.73's out of the hole and in the 60ft? right now i can cut a 2.0 60ft with my 2.73's.

my point being is should i install the 3.42's or go for something else, as in 3.73's?

thanks,
steve

i had a '93 Z with an A4 that had facotry 2.73's and i changed to 3.73's and it didnt effect my gas mileage like everyone is scared of. It was fine. 3.73's make your car feel totally monsterous on the bottom end! i dont know about 3,42's.. i myself like the 3.73 choice though. :-)

In my 98 A4 LS1 I went form an 8.7 to an 8.2 with just a gear change from 2.73 to 3.42...I have done 3.73's in my current Z, but I have no accurate method of comparison, since I did not run at the track before I put the 363CI Lt4 CC306 in.

..

I am also about to go from 2.73 to 3.42. My gears should be here Tuesday in the BBT! I am so anxious to go from stock induction gear to CAI and from 2.73 to 3.42 all in one swoop. A full report will follow so everyone can hear what will happen.

I figure if I cant hook with 2.73 and 2400 stall what good are the 3.42s going to do with street rubber. OR drag radials I smokem both.

Any of you guys got the info on what he needs for the swap?
I was told i need a new torsen or auburn differential...i dont want to spend that much money though...what options are there?

Another question: Saying you that you can hook up fine with 2.73's and 3.42's, what would be the difference in ET? (If there was total traction both ways)

I got a take off 3 series carrier from SLP for 99 bucks. Don't know if they have any left though. Also, get the 20 dollar reluctor gear if you still want ABS. It's different from the 2-series. Ask me how I know.
