20 second crank then car starts in limp mode
20 second crank then car starts in limp mode
My 1995 Z28 takes up to 20 seconds to start then when it does I get check engine light. Sometimes it starts normal within a second, then driving down the road it will die but if I have enough momentum it will keep running but check engine light comes on. Once the Check engine light is on my car runs ok with a little sputter at stop lights and hesitation off the line. I have replaced my o2 sensors and plugs and wires. I dont know what code it is throwing because its a 95 and most scanners cant read my car. Any suggestions?

Re: 20 second crank then car starts in limp mode
If you have a laptop, you can get some programs that can read you computer, you need a cable from akm or someone similar. If you have a obd2 connector, see shbox's website on how to jumper it. Then you can read the codes. I was having a problem where my water temp sensor went bad, and it was reading -50 degrees. The computer was dumping fuel, causing the long starts, and the check engine light. Once the engine started, it ran ok. If these are your symptoms, then try this if you still cannot scan it.

And, here's the links you need.
Shoebox's diagram that shows you how to scan your 95 with a common OBD-I scanner:
http://shbox.com/1/xraycable.jpg
Or, find an OBD-I scanner with the correct 12-pin --> 16-pin adapter plug.
Note that you cannot use the Actron 90001 scanner, because all that does is short the pins in the ALDL connector to flash the codes on the SES light, and 1993 was the last year that will work.
Or, as mentioned above...... software(free):
TTS DataMaster (free download, 20 free uses):

FreeScan (totally free):
