2.73's to 3.73's
just got my car back today i went from 2.73 to 3.73. i bought the strange gear 3.73 (series 2 carrier). i had it installed in a pro shop that is very reputable. the guy installed them with no problem test drove reveiled a pretty good whine, we took it back to the shop and he pulled the cover and rechecked everything. he said it was aligned perfect. he called Strange and talked to the tech crew. they said that it is normal for that gear to whine more than others because it is thicker. they also said it would get better with time. just to let you all know. thanks
I went from 2.73's to 3.73's and my gas went from 21city/24highway to 18city/21highway. At 70 I am running at 2600 rpms. I did notice I can get about 1 to 2 more mpg by driving 65 instead of 75. I drive about 80 miles a day, mostly highway driving and it doesn't bother me. You will love them.
I don't know if you use your car for a daily driver but if you do...
I went from 2.73 to 3.42 in my A4. Perfect for the street and interstate. I cann't imagine driving 75-80 on the interstate for anything longer than about an hour with higher gearing. It's just too loud with exhaust. Their is alot of young street/drag racer bias that goes along with these cars. If this is you daily driver get 3.42. The pros far outway the cons. I think this thinking goes with cam, tq's, ect. It's just the "I don't want to do it twice" bug gets you along with advice from the race only crowd here that makes daily drivers over do everything and then the car drives like trash. Some will say their is not much difference between 3.42 to 3.73. That's true with just about every upgrade notch though. I small over do here and one there, ect and they add up to make something you didn't want. I car that is no longer a daily driver. Just something to thing about.

I didn't read the rest of the posts but...
I went from 2.73's to GM Motive 3.73's. I had Detroit Speedworks install them and they are perfectly quiet. I noticed a huge difference and I would recommend ANY A4 to go with these gears. I dropped about 7 tenths with gears and pcmforless tuning (otherwise stock car except for CAI and !cat).

instead of just going with XXX gears based on everyone elses recommendation, I suggest finding out what YOU need.
If your looking for gears that are going to get you the best 1/4 times, the first step is to figure out what your goals are in the 1/4, then take a gear/tire calculator and figure out what gear is going to get you over the line at that MPH in the top of the gear you want...for example:
I want to trap 117 or so in the 1/4 which should be enough to get me 11's without having to get a bunch of traction and split the rear end...so using the RPM/MPH calculator at:
https://www.camaroz28.com/calcs/index.shtml
and plugging in a few different gear ratios, using 26 inch tall tires and 1.0:1 transmission gear ratio (4th gear for me, 3rd for you A4 guys) I come up with a 3.90:1 ideal gear ratio for me, which allows me to hit the finish line at 117MPH/5899 RPM...this also allows me additional room if I want to increase power more, and trap 120MPH I'll do it at a hair over 6000RPM. If I was to go with a 4.10:1 gear ratio, I'd be crossing the line at 6202 which probably wouldn't leave me much room for growth (depending on engine combo).
Since as far as I know you can't get a 3.90 gear for a GM 10 bolt rear, I will likely go with 3.73's. I will make that determination after I talk to someone knowledgeable (say Combination Motorsports) about an engine combo to get me there. If I'm gonna be winding the motor out to 6500 anyway, I could go ahead with the 4.10's
See? easy!
