Question 2.73's to 3.73's

I was looking to upgrade my stock 2.73 gears to some 3.73's. What company do you recommend for gears? Is there anything else I should add while they are being changed?

Thanks for all the help.

I did the swap you are talking about. You will need a series 3 carrier or thick gears. I went with GM motive gears and a SLP take-off series 3 carrier. I also went with a rear end Girdle for added strength.

Hey 97f1z28, I was thinking of doing that same gear switch but Im still not sure if I want to do it. If you could answer some questions I would appreciate it.
1: Stupid one but what was your MPG before and after.
2: How bad is it on the highway; RPM's
3: And did you notice any 1/4 times

I ask because from all of my searching, I keep getting mixed reviews on every question ie; no 1/4 gain or oh I had .5-.3 whatever, mileage everyone says that it just sucks but im curious of a number. My car was getting 12 MPG until I got a tune up, o2's and such and now its up to 17-20. Curious if it will fall below 12??? And does the motor rev so much that it drives you crazy on the highway?

Well thanks in advance,
Rich T

Well, I did Hot Cam, Headers, and Gears all at the same time. I noticed a significant drop in fuel efficiency. With my previous bolt ons, i was getting about 220 miles on a full tank. I have only gone two tanks on my new setup, and i was only getting 140 to a full tank. However, i haven't been programmed yet so im hoping to get back a MPG or two. (running hella rich right now)

I also don't recommend the SLP Torsen take-off diff. I would go with an Auburn posi unit. The SLP diff i ordered came with a bad spline and now it's whining like crazy. The Torsen diff carrier is also more for road racing where the Auburn is better for drag racing. As for the other questions, i haven't been to the track yet, and I'm estimating at 70 mph, u'll be around 2 grand

I went from 3.23s to 3.73s and can say that my MPG went down a little, yours souldn't go below 12 mpg. Cruising on the highway is not bad, doing about 55 I am at a little over 2000 rpm. My 3.73s whine a little bit at higher speeds, but it isn't to noticalbe and I don't care. I have no 1/4 times but I can say that the SOTP gain was amazing. As long as you have traction, the car will rocket off the line. I bought mine from Richmond and have had no problems with them. My cousin gained 4 tenths in his 97 Z28.

Hope this helps.

i recommend richmonds due to their strength, mine whine between 40-50 but with our 10 bolts being so weak why not at least do your best to keep it alive

1: Stupid one but what was your MPG before and after.

Before the swap i was getting around 240-250 to a tank. After the swap I am still getting between 210-220. Which is around 14-15 MPG.

2: How bad is it on the highway; RPM's

I have not driven the car in several months (stupid winter) so i could be wrong. But i think at 70 it was around 2400rpm.

3: And did you notice any 1/4 times

I have no 1/4 times as of yet but can tell you that your 60 foot times will suck. I spin like crazy off the line. Hopefully nitto's will take care of this.

Hope this helps
Andy

I was thinking definitely a TA Girdle, and a Posi unit, and some Motive Gears, but is the conversion from a 2-series carrier to a 3 really necessary? What is involved in this swap?

Where in MI are you?? I have a 10 bolt w 3.73's that I will be looking to get rid of next week. The rearend has a Strange 3.73 with a series 2 carrier. I am looking to get 375 for it. Let me know if you are interested.

If you decide to order gears I would go with a set of Strange 3.73 gears for a series 2 carrier. Personally I do not see a benefit by stepping up to a series 3 carrier. Remember if you decide to go with a series 3 carrier you will need a new reluctor gear.

You will need the following to complete the swap

-3.73 gear
-Installation Kit
-Rearend oil and Posi Additive

Question: I want to keep the factory carrier and change the gear to 3:73. I have 3:23 now on a factory car and my gas mileage sucks I get like 175 miles a tank.
Thanks guys

I live in Pinckney(probably never heard of it) right around the Brighton area. Does it have the Posi and a Girdle? How many miles does it have?

The car does not have a girdle. The rearend has a total of 70,000 miles on it but it has 10,000 with the 3.73's. This rearend is complete with differential and all. The only thing this rearend will not include is the brake rotors. Let me know if you are interested.

just got my car back today i went from 2.73 to 3.73. i bought the strange gear 3.73 (series 2 carrier). i had it installed in a pro shop that is very reputable. the guy installed them with no problem test drove reveiled a pretty good whine, we took it back to the shop and he pulled the cover and rechecked everything. he said it was aligned perfect. he called Strange and talked to the tech crew. they said that it is normal for that gear to whine more than others because it is thicker. they also said it would get better with time. just to let you all know. thanks
