1997 Trans Am will not start after sitting 6 years !!!
Re: 1997 Trans Am will not start after sitting 6 years !!!
you can check fuel at the rail by depressing the valve on the rail, that would let you know if there is pressure there or not.if there is its probably your injectors. And as far as 6 years old fuel I would DD the tank and R2 the fuel filter as it probably has some really gummy fuel in it.
Re: 1997 Trans Am will not start after sitting 6 years !!!
By squirting starter fluid in it and firing up, you proved it's fuel related. 6 YO fuel is now like syrup. It wouldn't burn with kerosene and hand grenades. If you can get it out, your probably gona have to remove the sock on the end of the pump. You could take off the inline fuel filter and put 12 volts on the fuel pump prime connector and see if it pumps out. But it's gona smell to high heaven.
Sorry didn't mean to repeat the post above, didn't see it until after I posted my response.

Re: 1997 Trans Am will not start after sitting 6 years !!!
I had gas sitting in my ATV's for 3 years, it dried in the carbs leaving a crusty residue that gummed the hell out of everything. I would bet that your injectors are suffering from a similar problem.

I tried the quick start fluid down the intake after taking the plastic plumbing off. It will run for about 3 seconds but will not draw fuel from the tank. I hear the pump making a noise. Any other suggestions. I guess the opti is working as there is a spark now its a fuel related problem.

First check to see if your getting fuel to the rail first before assuming injectors. If your not getting anything coming up through the rail then you could either have a clog in the filter and or tank. Do the the first steps to make sure of everything just jump to conclusions that its the injectors

Hotrodblazer! you are a GOD!
After a 5 year (I know, I know...) rebuild, the engine would not start... baffled me for days. Cranked fine, no codes, spark fine, pressure fine, voltage fine... I rapped the injectors like you said, and it started right up! Thank you VERY much!

Thanks to everyone that has responded. I have NOT done anything about the car yet. It is 600 miles from home. I never thought of the pressure valve to see if there was pressure at the rails. As stated it ran for a second off starter fluid so I presume fuel related. I probably will have to trailer it home. On the plus side the rest of the car still looks perfect with zero rust and no mice tracks inside. It is my own fault it sat this long.thanks.
Re: 1997 Trans Am will not start after sitting 6 years !!!
As others have said, get the old fuel out of there- siphon, drop the tank, whatever- put some new, fresh fuel in it, maybe with some fuel injector cleaner, Gumout or similar, and see if you can get it to run for a few seconds with starter fluid or something combustible sprayed into the intake. If you can get the new fuel pumping through the system, it *MAY* be able to dissolve and clean out the gum and residue. The stuff in the gas tank right now is next to worthless- gasoline has lots of volatiles in it, that are no doubt gone- even things like ether and butane- If you smell what is in the tank, you will immediately know that you don't want to be running what is in there now, after sitting 6 years.
Good luck bringing it back to like. After it starts and runs, you will probably be wanting to change ALL the fluids. Some of them, like brake fluid, are hygroscopic, meaning that they will absorb moisture out of the air. If you look at the maintenance intervals, you will see that the manufacture specifies either miles OR years, and you are well into needing to replace coolant, differential oil, transmission oil, pretty much everything.

Re: 1997 Trans Am will not start after sitting 6 years !!!
I dont know if you already did this or was already said, but go ahead and get a new fuel filter, my car sat up for 5 years and the pump died from sitting and injectors wouldnt work. I got all that fixed but noticed yesterday that it still runs a lil rough so we are replacing the filter tommorow and running some Lucas through it.
Re: 1997 Trans Am will not start after sitting 6 years !!!
Have you checked too see if the injectors were working correctly? 4 bolts on the top of the intake is all the holds them on! also check your fuel pressure!
