1997 Trans Am will not start after sitting 6 years !!!

I have a 1997 Transa Am that is in another State. Today was the first time I had a chance to see it in 6 years. Its been inside a single car garage, locked on a cemet floor with a tarp layed over the cement. I put a new battery in it. Checked the fluids. Put 2 gallons of fresh fuel in it. It turns over but thats it. Does not attempt to fire. It was approx 20 degrees today but a fresh battery. Any ideas what could be the problem.I probably will just make plans to haul it home on a trailer. All the tires stayed up and the car lots preety much the same as when I put it away running.I know I should not have left it that long but my Son died and other things in my life have occured. I did put fuel stabilzer in it when I stored it. Any ideas

I would bet the fuel injectors are stuck. Get a 12 inch long 3/8 extension and place it on intake near each injector. Rap sharply on extension with hammer to "shock" injector. When fuel dries up in them ,they will stick.I bought an Lt1 out of salvage yard and the hammer trick woke it up.
Try it,nothing to lose. Danny

Would all of them stick. If some stuck would it not missfire and run like crap? I am thinking fuel related but I think I here the pump. Wish I had more tools with me.Thanks and I will try your suggestion.

Did you check for fuel pressure and spark? Do you have a way to scan the car for DTC's?

back to the basics! Bring a little starting fluid and spray that in the throttle body while its being cranked, this will tell you if its fuel related or ignition related depending what it does

I'm sorry for the loss of your son.

I'd start with the fuel pressure.

Here is a troubleshooting chart from my 1996 factory manual.

I would have to agree, same thing happened to me except I had to remove and clean mine.

First guess would be bad gas. Stabil isn't made to keep the fuel good for that long. Also, is there any chance mice got to your wiring?

It certainly could be bad fuel, or sticking injectors or about 30 other things. As stated, start with a thorough attempt at diagnostics.

Check for spark
Check fuel pressure
Check for blockage in the air induction system (mice love to build nests in sitting cars)
Try the starter fluid idea.

While the rap on the intake manifold might work, I personally wouldn't rap on an aluminum intake to shock the rubber o-ring isolated injectors. An alernative idea would be to pull the injectors with the rail and energize the system and look for leaks. Then crank the engine over to look for fuel spray.

If you have spark, nothing blocking the air intake and fuel coming from the injectots, it will run. It'll will likely start with the starting fule, knock like crazy fro a second and then die. If that's the case, drain the fuel from the tank and fill it with fresh fuel.

Re: 1997 Trans Am will not start after sitting 6 years !!!

Thanks guys for all the advise. Especially those service manual pages. I honestly think it is a fuel problem. When I put the car away 6 years ago I filled the tank pretty well as I figured it would be better for condensation. My plans were to pick the car up within a one year frame period. I added approx 2 gallons yesterday. I think it is a combination of stale, frozen gas.All the fuel should be drain out. I think I will try again when it gets warmer but probably just flatbed it back to Canada. It could be anything. Thanks again.

Did you try spraying some starting fluid down the intake to see if it would actually try to turn over and run for a second or two? That right there might give you a better idea if its spark or fuel without doing much diagnosing.

Re: 1997 Trans Am will not start after sitting 6 years !!!

I tried the quick start fluid down the intake after taking the plastic plumbing off. It will run for about 3 seconds but will not draw fuel from the tank. I hear the pump making a noise. Any other suggestions. I guess the opti is working as there is a spark now its a fuel related problem.
