Re: 1995 LT1 steam vent options for project BIKE

Shoebox has the diagrams for a stock 93-94 and a 95-97 F-Body. The main difference is the routing of the steam pipe from the back of the heads. 93-94 it goes directly to the vapor/liquid seperator connection on the passenger side radiator END tank (there is no "top" tank on a stock F-Body radiator), and on the 95-97 setups it goes through the throttle body first.

Have you seen these diagrams:

Re: 1995 LT1 steam vent options for project BIKE

I think with my top and bottom tank setup the coolant lines would be correct after looking at the above links as my top hose (spigot) to the actual spigot that covers the thermostat is all on the left side. The fluid will flow thru into the top tank and out thru the bottom (spigot) right side and back up to the right side of the motor to the other Spigot on the water pump. This should be a cycle going clockwise looking at the front of the motor. When the thermostat builds pressure it opens and forces the coolant thru the coolant tube to the upper tank(radiator top left) and down to the bottom left radiator tank then back up the other side(right) to the right side of the motor in a cycle correct? If this is so, I may be able to tap into the spigot after the hose connection on the right side of the motor where the hose goes into for my steam releif. I could go thru the TB on the left as stock and out on the right to a barb fitting tapped into the spigot. Does this all make sense to anyone and would it work as planned? Thanks for all your input on this matter it really helps to talk things out with someone other than myself.

If you could route the steam line to the large hose off the pump (not the one with the thermostat housing), that would be the correct direction of flow (similar to hose #14 in the 93-94 diagram). I'm kind of lost reading the description above, LOL.

A few threads back I have enclosed some pics to view of my situation. Where I am getting confused is where my radiator sits in the rear. My TOP hose to the radiator I am considering the left side (opposite side of the red radiator cap) and where the thermostat spigot on the motor (left side also) would go. Now on the right side of the radiator right below the red cap would be the bottom radiator hose as its on the bottom of the radiator, this would go to the right side of the motor (large hose off the pump where the steam line could run into). It does get confusing but if you view the pics it all makes sense, (I THINK AT LEAST) LOL

On an aftermarket radiator not made entirely for the LT1 motor would it really matter whether I had the top hose or bottom hose going to either side of the LT1 water pump? Coolant will flow thru the radiator either way wouldnt it?

You want to take suction for the pump from the bottom of the radiator. If you try and pull the coolant out from the top, any air or vapor bubbles are going to enter the pump suction and reduce the flow capacity of the pump.

You want the coolant return at the top. Look at the factory diagrams. Shoebox added arrows to show the flow direction.

Re: 1995 LT1 steam vent options for project BIKE

I was thinking of just replacing the radiator with the top and bottom hoses on opposite sides such as the 1996 ford mustangs have and work it that way but then would have to re fab my mounting so I believe I am just going to leave things alone and get some longer hoses and re-route the hoses in the rear for the cooling and tap the therm. housing on the right side for the steam pipe relief. I will just have to moniter the temps and figure out how to get rid of any air pockets that is there from the 45 degree mounting of the radiator. Thanks all that participated in this little venture with me. I will post later when things are finished and share the outcome.
