1994 Z28 - Hard To Start - Throws Code

Hi:

Hopefully, someone has some suggestions to look for:

Here is the problem. 1994 Camaro Z28 with no mods other than it being converted to a 383.

You have to crank the engine longer than one would expect and pump the accelerator pedal -- seems to want a lot of fuel. Then it starts and throws a code.

The idle is erratic between 500 and 1000 RPMs. Once the car warms up it drives as if nothing were wrong.

As to the code. We cannot get it to read either on a code reader or by jumping the terminals using that simple tool.

I'm thinking the car is getting too much air at startup?

What are the possible causes? EGR valve stuck open? Could the MAF sensor be a cause? We unplugged the wire to the MAF sensor at idle and there was no change in operation. Did not drive with it off.

What could be the issue with not being able to get the code to read?

If you need any more details, I will try to answer any questions.

Thanks!

Paul

Get away from the thinking that pumping the pedal puts more fuel in the engine. Fuel injection does not have an accelerator pump like a carburetor. If the pedal is held WOT while cranking, it will cut back the fuel.

I would have to agree, if you only converted your engine to a 383 and left everything else alone. There is the start of your problem. Several things need to be changed, not the least of which is the PCM programming.

You have to get a scanner that is capable of scanning an F bod OBDI. But not the same as a 93 which could be done with a paper clip.

Thanks for your reply.

I guess I should have mentioned that the car has run fine (maybe could run better with a PCM tune) for over a year and this just started happening recently. We did change out the stock fuel injectors for ones a couple of pounds higher.

We did use an OBD1 code reader--took it to O'Reilly's to get the code read, and they couldn't read it.

And you are saying that you can't use a paper clip on a 94 to read the code?

Thanks,

If you have bigger injectors installed without having your PCM tuned for them you are asking for trouble..You are risking washing out the rings and bearings..That is probably your problem trying to get the motor to start.I would check the oil and make sure its not full of gas..Pull a plug or two,I bet they are soaked full of gas.

That is EXACTLY what he said, and he is 100% correct.
