160 Degree Thermostat

Wondering how much a 160 degree thermostat really helps the cars? Any modifications I would have to do to install one?

from what i learned 180 is better for power. gas will burn at the most efficent rate at around that temp. going hotter or cooler can hurt hp a little.

i went from 160 to 180 once i found that out. do a searce on it. someone dyno'ed thier car to prove that 180 is actually better.

unless your running a blower, nos, turbo or high timming stay at 180.

i could not find the dyno post but i did find some info to back me up in this post http://web.camaross.com/forums/showt...&highlight=160

also with fans set at 160 and electric water pump and watter wetter with the 160 thermo i could never get any lower then 167 degrees. but thats with a cam that heats things up quite a bit. but point being you need a a electric waterpump and have you fans set low to even see a major drop in temp with the 160.

now i stay at 180 now matter what weather we get here in Boston.

Lightbulb a thought on temp

please correct me if i'm wrong, but if he's looking to put in a 180 thermostat to get that temperture, wouldn't he get that with the 160 stat?

i thought i read in a post that someone had taken one of those heat temperture tools and tested the temp of the coolant and a 160 stat was actualy running close to a temperture of 180 degrees?
zoso

p.s. so a 180 stat, my run close to 200 degress?

A 180* stat will really make your engine run at about 190*. The thermostat OPENS at 180*, so the coolant can never get below that.

My 160* stat makes my car run at about 170* cruising. I have an auto xray to confirm all of this

I dont know if the cooler temps reduce hp, since there is a fine line between too cool and too hot on these motors, but i think it my reduce it a little. My MPG has remained the same virtually, down about .3 MPG. No biggie to me.

Re: 160 Degree Thermostat

Have had a 160 in mine for 20 years. I'd recommend a little higher if you'd like heat out of your heater in the winter. :-)
