15 degree pontiac heads and intake??
15 degree pontiac heads and intake??
Hey guys got a good deal on a set of 15 degree pontiac ex nascar heads with matching single plane intake. My question is with using the intake for the heads what do i have to convert? does anything even need converted to do this? I read plenty on converting if i wanted to us ethe LTx based intake, but since i am not what do i really need to convert?
Re: 15 degree pontiac heads and intake??
Are the heads in the pic what you are buying? If so, those heads are SB chevy, not pontiac. Pontiac heads are never gonna bolt to a LTX motor. Totally different setup.
Where's the carb or throttle body gonna go on that engine???

Re: 15 degree pontiac heads and intake??
They are the old nascar Pontiac heads basically SBC heads designed for teh cup series. Th ethrottle body wont be a issue the 4" VFN hood will clear it anyway. Pretty much just for the drag car. th eheads are a SBC head as I stated, just labeled as Pontiac heads,

As you can see they are just a nice set of prepped Cup heads. prior to the SB2 design.

well, you need mods to the heads to run them on a LTx, lots of welding to plug coolant ports, and machining to clean welds/open ports
plus, I don't know if anyone makes headers with the Stahl pattern to fit a 4th gen chassis

Re: 15 degree pontiac heads and intake??
The headers arent a problem at all. As I am looking at the old MT1 heads off my LT1 and the SBC heads i only see on port difference. Is this correct? As far as teh intake sid eof it what does it matter since i am running the intake that was with the heads to begin with?
Re: 15 degree pontiac heads and intake??
the bolt pattern on the exhaust ports is a Stahl pattern, not the standard SBC one
you need to plug/modify the coolant passages in the deck surface of the heads, or you will get coolant going strait into the lifter valley
you need to plug the intake gasket surface coolant passages as well, since if you dont, you will over heat
and are you going to use the opti, or a standard dist.? if opti, you need to plug the dist. hole in the back of that intake

You have to convert them to reverse cool and do some other stuff along with PISTONS to make it all work.... could make some nice power though.
Hey I have some Olds valve covers for a SBC head if you want to really screw with people.

I can hear it now-- Must be an ex Pro Stock or something.

Picked the set up at a nice swap meet right near bristol saturday. As far as teh pistons yea i know they 396 assembly will need some 18* pistons and such. Will probally run the XFI injection on it.

I'm all for confusing the enemy.... I'd go Rocket block (Big olds "rocket" cast into the side), Pontiac heads and Bow-tie valve covers.
Those were pretty good heads in their day.
As for the headers, I think you'll find your problem when you go to bolt them on. The ports are going to be much higher in relation to the bolt locations. You'll probably either see the port above the header flange or it will be just below it.
And Dave's right... I just scrolled back to the picture and they are Stahl pattern. Hey, you'll want a custom header for this kind of deal anyways.
