Re: 1/4 inch crankshaft end play

Must be a misunderstanding.

Crankshaft end play is usually deemed ok at .004-.010. You're talking about 1/4-inch or .250.... No way jose. Even without a thrust bearing in place it wouldn't be that much.

So yeah, I'm thinking that you misunderstood what they were talking about.... maybe it was something else. Call and talk to the mechanic for clarification.

Good luck.

Exclamation Re: 1/4 inch crankshaft end play

if it's not burning a lot of oil and there is no real engine noise , i'd replace the crank bearings and rod bearings,or possibly the crank and bearings now instead of when you have a real problem, it sounds like this engine can be saved. the crank would have to be inspected to see if the journals are ok to accept new bearings and what size.
how many miles on it, how hard do you drive it, how much money do you have to spend.
it's hard to believe there is a 1/4 inch of play, both thrust surfaces would have to be almost all the way gone to get that much.
if you didn't already put a bigger cam ,torque converter or port the heads, now would be the time to pull the engine

Red face Re: 1/4 inch crankshaft end play

Why the Chicken Little, Sky is falling answer???

The guy just had a front oil seal replaced.... hardly the end of the world, or his engine for that matter. The 1/4 inch endplay statement is not happening and he needs to find out exactly what they were trying to tell him.

yup, it's easy to jump the gun here, double ck the end play, he's probably just looking for a reason to go in and get some more hp ... just kidding, i'll be the silent observer on this one

Re: 1/4 inch crankshaft end play

.250" can't happen...... even if you had NO THRUST SURFACE on the rear main bearing it wouldn't move that much.

Endplay can only be measured with a dial indicator and pushing the crank for and aft in the block, and as Mindgame said it's only .004-.010 and when it's high it's around .025" or so.

Usually a gain in endplay is caused by a problem with the converter ballooning up and pushing against the crank in a bad way. A motor almost never causes this problem to itself.

Re: 1/4 inch crankshaft end play

i was considering both sides of the thrust bearing being worn very badly, approx .090 thickness each side....either way it can't be .250 because the crank throw to block clearance is less than .100 .
just listen to mindgame and sstrokerace, very knowledgeable people from what i've read, and i'll be a little more careful with any advice
