1 3/4 -> 1 7/8 stepped headers?

Does anyone have any input on how 1 3/4" stepped to 1 7/8" longtube headers work out on a "cam only" LT1? I was about to put in an order for the new LPP stainless longtubes but they're stepped, and IIRC people have said that the stepped design hurts low and midrange power for all but the most powerful cars (450+ rwhp).

The only people who want to run 1 7/8 headers are the completly clueless people who think bigger is better. The LPP headers are just another product that is going to slow down the average h/c LT1.

Are the headers he swapped to STEPPED though or the whole thing is 1 7/8"? It doesn't say anywhere that he was running the stepped ones.

Stepped ones aren't going to make a huge difference, and he is making over 150rwhp more than most cam only cars.

Everything I was able to find, which wasn't a whole lot, seemed to indicate that there was not really one correct answer. The things I read seemed to indicate that, for the most part, stepped headers didn't really make a difference. For my needs, I felt they would just be a waste of money.

If you're trying to decided between Pacesetters and the new LPP's, I don't think I would let the fact that they're stepped keep you from buying them as they're pretty cheap anyway, and they're stainless.

There is a pretty long discussion thread somewhere on this site. I think I found it via Google. I was also able to find some other discussions and research via Google.

Not everyone will agree, and some people have experienced gains from stepped headers.

I bought a program called PipeMax. Doing some research for the best street exhaust system for my car. Anyways after putting in all the information the program calls for 1 5/8" headers for my 440 horsepower L98 motor. I was kind of suprised as I'm currently running 1 3/4" headers.

I ran someone elses high powered 383 through the program and it says he should use 1 3/4" headers. He expects to make 400rwhp and it looks like he should do it.

Problem with bench racing headers is it fails to consider what actually fits the chassis of a street car.

Well, I've been preaching 1 5/8" headers for a long time on this board, unless you are going to make well over 400rwhp. There are a LOT of advantages.

I love my MAC Mids and wouldn't trade them for any 1 3/4" header, even if someone payed me $100 to switch.

To date I have tried 1 5/8" mids and 1 5/8to2"to2 1/2" Tri-Ys and both seemed to work fairly well.

500+ RWHP. Doubt that is an average head/cam car.

Not calling BS on the numbers posted in the chart. But the difference is pretty extreme as shown. I doubt these were taken on the same motor on the same day, so that would have to factor in a bit. There would have to be another variable in there somewhere for that difference.
