I managed to get a breaker bar on there and had a friend hold the flywheel so it wouldn't move. It would move slightly but the bolts finally budged off.

Anothe method is to have a friend hold a wrench to the crank pulley so as to keep the flywheel from moving.. then getting the flywheel bolts off that way.

To bad im by myself on this job. Im thinking if I wedge a piece of wood against the floor and the flywheel that maybe that will keep it from turning.

Have someone help keeping the harmonic balancer from turning with an extension.

wedge something between the flywheel and the pan.

There is a tool you can buy specifically for this purpose. It's pretty cheap and looks like a big screwdriver with an arm attach near the bottom. You hook it on a tooth on the ring gear and then stick the screwdriver tip into another tooth and then it becomes a handle to turn the flywheel or just hold it in place to tighten or loosen.

The other thing you can try is to turn the flywheel so the bolt you are loosening is on the other side from where you are trying to turn it from. This will give you more leverage on the bolt, but not on the crank because you're pushing back across the lower part of the flywheel compared to the bolt.

Good luck,

Well I got the flywheel to stay put but now the bolts are so tight that I still can't get them loose. Im off to go buy a big breaker bar but still, the the 12pt. socket I have was starting to slip and round the bolts slightly. So I dont know if its gonna help or not but I guess we'll see.

I could be mistaken, but I think flywheel bolts are reverse thread.

no they are not reverse threaded...i did what was said earlier, get the bolt u want to loosen at the top of the flywheel (by turning engine) and put an end wrench on it vertically coming down...and just go at the wrench with a hammer..this gives u leverage on the bolt, but not on the flywheel

cool..

yea, I couldn't remember exactly from when I did mine if they were reverse or not, but I remeber they were on there about 70FtLbs worth.

Glad you got them off...

Always use a 6 point socket for high torque bolts. It's good insurance. If you think it's hard to get out now, wait until you strip the head.

Use a rag wedged between the flywheel and the housing to keep the flywheel from turning.

Yep the air tools are great for breaking stuff loose. Next best thing would be a mallet. Just hold the ratchet or wrench steady and start tapping. It will give way eventually, even if you have to work it back and forth.
