WTF is in the wheels?

Cleaning my painted calipers today and noticed something wierd on the inside of the wheel. There were two strips of these metal squares, glued on with some sort of adhesive. Each square had little measurements inscribed on them. 1/7 or /4 I believe. Anyone have any idea what the hell these are?

Those are adhesive backed wheel weights. Removing them will unbalance your wheels.

So when I get new tires put on and get a balance they add and subtract those weights?

whenever you replace your tires, they will most likely remove the existing weights and start from scratch to balance the wheel with the new tire....

...some weights are adhesive backed and are put on that inner side of the wheel like yours, or they'll use weights that attach to the lip of the rim of the wheel.

O, I see. Thanks for the clarification.
