Woes about switching to ls1.

I am thinking about getting an m6 ls1 in the near future. Currently have an a4 lt1. Here are two woes i have.

The rumor that ls1s have no low end torque. I realize there is a post about this right next to mine and I do know they make up for it up higher. Now, I know the general consensus is that lt1s make more torque down low but, how does the ls1 compare to other cars?

The rumor that ls1s sound like crap. (I have heard a few modified ls1s and they sounded awesome, also heard an ls1 vette that had something done to it and it sounded like crap, forgot exactly what it was but it sounded so unrefined and raspy). Are there any ls1 owners that feel they sound inferior to lt1s?
btw, i have an open cutout on my car and I love it, I really am gonna miss this thing.

Is there anything about my lt1 car that I will miss besides these things?

Re: Woes about switching to ls1.

Anyone who says the LS1 lacks low end torque is an idiot. My stock LS1 feels much faster out of the hole than my LT1 did. There is a reason for this: it IS faster out of the hole.

My LS1 car is better in every possible way than my LT1. Except perhaps exhaust note.

If you're really concerned, go true duals. IMO the Loudmouth doesnt sound too hot on the LS1, but a more conservative, deeper exhaust does.

EDIT: I'm in the market for a cutout. Wanna sell it

I have an 02 ls1 w/ stock manifolds, gutted cats, borla y-pipe, and Borla catback w/open plate and it sounds excellent! I have not had a bad complaint yet w/ the sound.

I guess it just depends on what your taste is in exhaust sound.

something you will miss by changing to an ls1....losing races

the ls1 is within 10# of torque of the LT1 below 4000rpms from the dyno sheets that i've seen.

Seeing how the LS1's power is underrated, stock, they make about 375 FT-LBS., which is a lot of torque. For an engine that's 9 yrs. old, the LS1 compares very favorably to other newer cars with DOHC valvegear, supercharged, turboed, and Hemis.

It all depends on the exhaust. My car sounds very deep and hulking, especially under and overpass or a tunnel.

Re: Woes about switching to ls1.

its not that the LS1 has no low end torque it just has a different feel to it. My opinion is this:

I went and test drove a 98 M6 Z28 for a friend that was interested in buying it and I have since driven his car A LOT. His car is faster than mine(m6 LT1) but yet to me and even the owner of the LS1 says my car feels faster. I think its because the Lt1 has more off idle and low end torque, below 3k, its a fact. And its delivers that in a much more "violent" way than an LS1 does. And LS1's are more refined, it pulls out the hole and pulls and when it gets to about 4k rpms it really starts to pull(where most LT1's start to breath heavy)

His car would always hook pretty good never getting "stupid" in 1st gear from a slow roll where as my car just went all over the road. This being that whole violent thing. My car was real responsive and would hit hard enough to break the tires loose at will any time in 1st gear trough the majority of 2nd. But from a dig, that LS1, if he broke the tires loose off the line would have a hell of a time trying to get it to hook again.

Just my .02

And you will miss the sound......even his now cammed LS1 holds no candle to my now cammed LT1. Now we just have to see who is still faster

Re: Woes about switching to ls1.

Stock LS1's generally run mid to low 13's. How many stock LT1's do this? Now do you think a torqueless engine could run that much faster than an engine with supposedly more torque?

After all this BS I went and looked at my old dynos. Very close to stock (lid and a ported and decreened MAF) I made 315 lb/ft and the curve is broad. Unfortunately it started detonating coutesy of the ported and descreened MAF and it never hit peak. Got shut down by 4800 RPM. Can a good running LT1 with a CAI even hit the number that my lean LS1 did???

Re: Woes about switching to ls1.

Torque wise it is possible I think...however HPwise no.

Look at a dyno sheet. I think you will see the LT1 just has more torque just off idle.

How many dyno sheets show off idle???

Now ask yourself, how much total time does an engine see RPM below 3k when racing?

Re: Woes about switching to ls1.

i have stock exhaust manifolds, catted y, w/ bassni cat-back and i just installed a cut out...

it sounds like straight **** between 2-2.5k which is highway crusing rpm for me it just resonates and drones so bad, like almost deafening

ohh well though, from 2.5k on it sounds completely heavenly, i think i must have hit like 5k rpms 3 times in a row just because it sounded so wonderful... i love my LS1 and i know you will too!

Re: Woes about switching to ls1.

set the worries aside, your trying to compare apples to oranges. All I can say is look at a dyno graph of a stock m6 LS1 to a stock m6 LT1 and see what ya get.

Re: Woes about switching to ls1.

Go to www.ls1sounds.com and listen to the way LS1's sound with different set ups. Many people seem to think that the Loudmouth 1 exhaust with LT's/ORY sounds "too raspy" but I think it sounds great. When you go into something like this, it is really just a matter of opinion. Some people (usually LT1 owners) prefer and swear by the sound of an LT1, just as some people (usually LS1 owners) will swear by the sound of aluminum blocks. As for power, the LS1 is not going to leave you disappointed. 'Nuff said.
