whats the best first 5 starting mods of the ls1 ?
Re: whats the best first 5 starting mods of the ls1 ?
My vote would be LCA's ($100), SFC's ($180), 3600 2.2STR converter ($400), gears ($150), and a lid ($90). That's less than $1K in parts if you know where to look. Throw in a cutout ($40) and a set of drag radials (borrow from friend) and it'll drop your 1/4 mile times by at least a 1/2 second (12's no doubt) all for under $1K.

the LCA's help transfer lift to the body and plant the axle on the pavement.
Subframes tie the front end and the rear parts of the unibody together and prevent extreme chasis flex, and REALLY stiffen up the car, or so i hear, i have mine in the garage, havent installed yet.... triangulated ones are best.

what kind of driving are you planning...
some of what i would do for drag racing is not what i would do for street or autoX.
but to generalize:
for anything...traction is important. and without good rubber...all the power or suspension mods on earth won't do ****. so either drag radials for the track or a good set of street tires like bfg g-force KDs, or KDWs, or the goodyear GS-D3s (or whatever the lettering is on those), or the firestone firehawk SZ50s.
power:
lid, exhaust
lid is a lid is a lid...
exhaust depends on how much the budget is and how much you want to change. if nothing else a good catback. and better yet a good set of coated long tube headers.
power to the ground:
subframe connectors and lower control arms are good for any "racing" style.
as is a good shifter and shift light for M6 cars. for drag racing a good converter and gears for the auto. not sure how an autoX car reacts to a converter, but the gears should help if nothing else.
if you are doing handling mods, sway bars make a nice improvement, and are easy to install. springs and shocks are also VERY worth it. if you don't want to lower the car...at least get some good shocks.
hope that helps

Tops 5 mods that we do are the following
Catback/Lid
Headers
stall/shifter (depending if your auto or 6spd)
LCA's
Wheels/tires
That is its usally done in order. However i would recomend the following steps
SFC's
Lid/catback
Headers
stall/shifter
Light tune on the car

Re: whats the best first 5 starting mods of the ls1 ?
My suggestions;
headers & cutout
lid
ported throttlebody
pulley.
By the time you get all those installed, you'll be able to decide after that. My friend mwill15 just went 12.57 @ 111 in a 6-speed car with a cutout, longtubes, and a lid. That's on street tires, and no other modifications.

Re: whats the best first 5 starting mods of the ls1 ?
Yeah I keep telling myself I'm gonna get some SFCs but so far it hasn't happened. I do plan on doing quite of bit suspension stuff when I get ready for my new motor.
Re: whats the best first 5 starting mods of the ls1 ?
yeah same here, i put off the SFC's forever, now that i have my kenny browns, they're still sitting there and i STILL havent installed them! Its hard to buy stuff that doesnt increase horsepower or traction when you're on a really tight budget lol
