What is "TORQUE MANAGMENT"?
What is "TORQUE MANAGMENT"?
Well, what is it? What does it do? How does it work? Why in the HELL would it be on a "peformence" car? Did it come on any of the 4th gen fbody's?
Just the whole name sounds scary. I don't want a computer "managing" my torque. I can manage it perflectly fine with my right foot, thank you very much. If I want to smoke the tires up in a blaze of glory, there better not be a computer limiting my ability to do that.(although I doubt there is torque managment on our cars)

Re: What is "TORQUE MANAGMENT"?
Yes, 4th-gens had "torque management". Hopefully someone can explain it better than me, but basically, the computer retards the timing momentarily just before a shift, and only allows full advance once the transmission is into the next gear. This is done to minimize the damaging effects of ~300+ HP & LB-FT being applied through the shifts. I think it would be easier to program this into an automatic, as I don't know exactly how the computer "knows" your're shifting, unless it's programmed to apply when you clutch or something?
FWIW, I believe that programmers like LT1/LS1 Edit can remove torque management completely

Re: What is "TORQUE MANAGMENT"?
There is torque management on LS1's, though I'm not sure if it's on all LT1's or not.
It's there for your protection. Not from enthusiastic driving, but from "neutral dropping" in an automatic car, hitting the rev limiter, and such events.

Re: What is "TORQUE MANAGMENT"?
Basically it retards the timing on the A4 during the shift. Think of it as accomplishing the same thing as lifting the gas during a manual shift ...
If you eliminate it completely you are effectively power shifting all of the time and very likely will shorten the life of your tranny. That said, it is an improvement to eliminate it for your 1/4 mile times ... that's why I have 2 PCMs.
One for daily driving and one for the track with my timing advanced to the point it will only run on 100 octane, with TM removed and desensitized knock detect ... There's about 12 rwhp and 3 tenths difference between the 2 PCMs ...

Re: What is "TORQUE MANAGMENT"?
yep these guys have it right...don't worry, it's not gonna limit your ability to spin tires or anything. it has NOTHING to do with acceleration slip reduction (ASR) or traction control.

I've had mine out for about a year now (around 25,000 miles on it) with zero problems. Of course I am no where near 380rwhp

However I think if you are going to be pushing 380rwhp or greater than you very may well be killing your tranny.

I have a 01 Z28, and after a TC change, and Transgo shift kit install (to handle the increased line pressure), the dyno tuner deleted the TM. Before the TM was deleted, my shifts were way sloooooow @ higher RPM's, after the dyno tune, nice and crisp.
The problem with TM is more prevalent in the 01 &02 models. If you are running the stock converter, and rearend gears, don't worry about it, leave it alone.

I would bet that M6 cars don't have it though, becuase the PCM can't caluculate when you are going to shift.
Now, does torque management work in a similar fashion in other cars? I've heard that supercharged Grand Prix's have torque managment too and it hurts the peformence in those cars. But I'm not sure if that is some b.s. info I read a long time ago.

And as far as the GTPs goes. Not B.S. The 04s have more HP and run slower in the 1/4 due to TM.
Oh and as a side note, I've had TM out for 3 drag racing years. Over a hundred passes a year. Low to middle 12s for 2 years and middle 11 all this last year. Takes a licking and keeps on ticking. 4L60e with Yank ST3800 TC, TransGo valve body kit, and B&M 19,000gvw cooler.
