What to look for when buying a LS1 Fbody
What to look for when buying a LS1 Fbody
Ok guys, I finally got my new job, and will be graduating next semester. This means that I can finally get me another Fbody
. I am definetly getting a 98+ LS1, and was just wondering what to look for for possible problems down the road. Since I already had a 99 camaro before, I already know what to look for as far as the body and chasis are concerned, but is there anything else I should really look for that is just LS1 specific? I am going to run a carfax (when I find one I am interested in) and take it to get a mechanic's check done on it. Other than that though, do you guys know of any common problems to definetly check before purchasing the vehicle (ex: tranny mounts, sensors, HVAC system, ect). Thanks for the help!

Re: What to look for when buying a LS1 Fbody
Is there anything else to look for? Like the LT1's leaking oil at the back of the intake manifold and onto the motor causing black smoke to appear under acceleration. Or are these cars really a true work of art that won't fall apart after a few years and miles, like the LT1s will?? In the next week and a half or so I'll be looking for one myself, that's the only reason i'm asking. Thanks for all the help guys.

I would look for all the usual stuff leaking fluids, strange noises, etc.
Remember you'll be buying a used car, and it will have small maintenance issues. Just don't settle for the first car you find. There are some really nice low mileage cars out there, it just might take time, and some digging. Don't be afraid to pay more for a car that is better and well maintaned, it will pay for itself many times over. Good luck, and happy hunting.

There is going to be a difference in the price of an 01 ~ 02 vs. 98 ~ 00.
More than $450 anyway
Re: What to look for when buying a LS1 Fbody
Don't buy a car based on what year it is. All LS1 Fbodies are almost the same, no matter the year. Buy on mileage and condition.
Example:
Mint 98 SS Camaro M6 with 20K miles. $10,000.
Ragged on 2002 Camaro SS M6 with 20k miles. $14,000.
Now which one would you rather have????
