What are the difference between the SS and Z28?
I'm planning on converting my Z28 into a SS and was wondering what the differences are. What parts need to be added and replaced to make my Z28 into a SS? Also, if I convert it, will the title of the car change to SS from Z28? Thanks.
What year car? Chances are you'd get better responses in the appropriate forum (i.e. LT1, LS1) and this isn't really "advanced." well what i can think of for either car would be hood, wheels, possibly exhaust?, badging (exterior/interior).
I would say Z28 to SS would require....SS hood with functional airbox, SS spoiler, stiffer shocks, springs, and tran mount. Also 17x9 rims with 275/40/17 tires. That should about do it, but regardless, your car will never be a "true" SS. Anyone who knows how to read build codes will pick that up.
BTW...not quite "advanced" material.

It's a 1998 Z28. But I think there has to be more than just the hood, shocks and tires to go from 308 HP to 320+. Anyone know exactly what differences they are? Thanks.

nothing, a dual exhaust is part of it.
The hood, spoiler, badges and wheels are about it. The engine is underated at 310-320hp anyways. I would guess 340-360hp stock on all of the F-bodies for real.
It's going to get moved to LS1Tech real soon.

Please post generation specific questions on the proper forum... in this case "LS1 Tech"...... there is nothing "Advanced" or "Technical" in your question.
Moving to "LS1 Tech"......
Thank you.
Fred
PS: Before posting, you might prepare yourself from the comments you are going to get from "real" SS owners.... in fact, there is NOTHING you can do to your car to make it into a "real" SS.

Hood, spoiler, wheels, badges, cat back exhaust.
That's it. There is no real HP advantage from a Z28 to an SS. It's all an illusion. The Ram Ait hood is a joke. It's actually just a cold air induction because the air isn't forced into the air box. And even then the ductwork in the hood is heated up by the engine so it's not even a very good cold air induction setup. But I wouldn't own a 4th gen Camaro without the SS hood. The spoiler is also a huge improvement over the flat Z28 spoiler.
If I was changing a Z28 into an SS I'd just swap hood, spoiler and maybe the wheels. Aftermarket wheels might be a cheaper alternative to getting a set of SS 17's. Yank all badging off and don't add the SS emblems. Otherwise you're asking for people to throw the poser name at you. And you won't have any defense against it because you will be "posing" your car off as an SS.

I remember when my Z28 badging was black on my black car. Some people really got a surprise.
But I couldnt live with people thinking it was a V6, so I had to get them in silver.

However that's kinda like someone saying that they only run 14's when there car actually pulls 10's. It's not exactly the same thing as bragging about having something that you don't really have. That's more like putting a 455 big block into an old station wagon and playing with Corvettes from stop light to stop light. I totally agree that the Camaro looks better with the SS modifications. I'm sorry that you didn't/couldn't get an SS if that's what you really wanted. I really think you should do what ever the heck you want to do to your car. But when somebody hears you bragging about your SS and then finds out you just rebadged a Z28, they're gonna call you a poser.
...And they will be correct. Leave the badges off and don't brag about your SS. Brag about your Camaro. Everybody will still refer to it as your SS. Just don't correct them. Enjoy your little secret.

I have a '67 Goat. Actually it's a LeMans. Now it has a GTO grille and hood. Soon it will have the tail lights to complete the transformation. Everybody always asked me if that was my GTO. They never once called it a LeMans even though it still has all the LeMans emblems on it. And it hasn't seen a mile since the hood and grille were put on. That was full LeMans trim. GTO everywhere I went. I'm gonna leave the LeMans emblems on it even after the GTO transformation. Afterall, it has a 66 front end and a 67 back. People who really know their cars catch it and get confused. The other guys that talk like they know everything about GTO's make me laugh. Cause I know they didn't catch it. See it's fun!
If you left the spoiler the same and put an SS hood on there you'd be able to tell who really know anything about Camaros when they start to BS with you. The rest wouldn't even notice the spoiler. Have Fun!!!

I really wanted a SS, but I could not find a manual transmission version and the ones that I found were way too expensive or really far away to go buy it.
