TREX on the way !!!!

my buddy just ordered the TREX cam kit from TR.
he also got the adjustable comp cams timing set....
is there anything special we need to know about putting this timing set on?
this is going in a 2002 trans am with full bolt ons/long tubes.
the only problem is still has 3.42 (M6) gears, how bad will this affect performance?

where can i find a good online LS1 cam swap guide?

who does the best mail order tuning for this cam or ls1's?

thanks
jesse

Thumbs up

Nice. That's definitely a badass cam. I'll bet he'll be throwing in 4.10s before long though. Be sure to post up some dyno #s or track times for us soon!

i told him not to waste $500 on gear swap, to just get a 9" since he has a M6....

will the springs the kit (the upgraded comp cam springs 26921) work without any modifications to heads???

i suppose the stock lifters will be ok for now???

I would definitely recommend 4.10's (or 4.11's) for your friend's car, and a 12-bolt or 9" only if he can afford the extra ~$2000 right now! Otherwise for a street/strip car that isn't at the track EVERY week, then the 10-bolt will hold up for now. Believe it or not, there are guys running 10's still using the factory 10-bolt .

AFAIK, there shouldn't be any mods needed for those springs to work? But as far as "mail order" tuning, well.....maybe someone else can give you some direction there?

Please post some 1/4 mile #'s, and/or dyno #'s IF or WHEN they come available! Good luck doing the swap!

Very true, if he can swing it, that's definitely the way to go.

I'm also almost positive that the heads wont need to be modified to accept those springs. About the lifters, I know that some people upgrade them, but I would also say they're ok for now too.

ok, we just got off the phone with paul at thunderracing.com
he told us that the car would barely run with stock 3.42's in an M6....

he plans to upgrade to 4.10 or 4.11 soon....

i would venture to say he will pick up .5-.8 in the 1/4 with new gears? what do you think?

There's a guy over on LS1tech.com that recently had the TRex installed, I think it was the v.2 as well? He's running on 3.42's right now and said there wasn't any major issues.

mystic i sent you a pm,

i saw the post about that guy you mentioned.....
just by looking at the specs i would think that anything below 2500 would be very rough.....

i guess we will see, i will keep you all updated

I would go with 4.10's with that cam. I have a FM7 cam which is 224/230 .587 .593 114 and the stock 3.42's didnt work well for me at the track. I gained only 2 mph with the cam although i gained 44rwhp on the dyno. I ran 12.7 at 111.98 mph before the cam. The problem was because i had to shift to 4th gear just before the finish line due to the higher rev limiter(6700RPM). I ran a best of 12.4 at 114mph which was dissapointing and then tried not to shift to 4th and ran 12.5 at 108mph hitting the rev limiter at the last 100 ft or so. Im sure with the TRex u are going to have an even higher shift points than that which will make it even worse even though u might have more power which help a little bit. My advice go with 4.10's and enjoy every last bit of the power from the cam. I didnt change the gears because i just ordered 8.8 rear end with 3.73 gears which will be perfect for the my setup + 8psi from D1SC.

Even if he can't afford a new rear.. Get the gears asap...

The car is just gonna fall on it's face from a stop. It'll take forever for him to get into that cams power band with 3.42 gears.
