TR 224/224-114 General Questions

I've been considering installing a cam in my 2000 Camaro, and I think I've decided to go with the Thunder Racing 224/224 .561/.561 114 LSA camshaft.

I have all the intake mods (lid, bellow, 85mm MAF, ported TB), and I have a flowmaster muffler along with all factory cats. My rear end is stock with 4.10s. I also just installed the NOS 5177 dry kit, and intend to use the 100hp jets regularly.

Once I have the cash, I intend to purchase the LS6 intake and a set of LT headers.

The car is my only vehicle and it needs to be reliable enough to last me a few more years. (52k on the dial) Its a daily driver with weekend trips to the track.


For what I've listed above, is this cam a good choice? I don't mind a small amount of lope as long as it idles very well.

Is this a good package at a good price? Also, the Titanium Retainers are $100 extra. Should I get them or should i re-use my stock retainers? What would be benefit of the titanium retainers?

I'll be attempting to install the camshaft myself to save money. I've never done a cam swap before, but I've got plenty of time this summer to learn.

I'd also like to know where I can find a sound clip of this cam in an LS1.

Thunder racing has a GP on cam packages till 6/12.

I've read that cam is pretty good, but don't have expirience with it myself.

I have similar mods to you(no MAF or TB but have st headers) but decided to get chassis/suspension stuff first. SFC's, LCA's, LCA relocaion brackets(lowered car), and a STB. More power isn't going to help my wheelspin off the line , figured that I should address that first.

1st off you'll want the 224/224-112, the 114 is for an automatic. Get the titanium retainers, it's just good insurance for those high revs. I just bought the TR cam swap package with the 224/224-112 cam. Should be good with LT's for near 400rwhp with tuning. I wouldn't try to install it myself but go for it. You should get tuning too once you have LT's headers etc. It's also a good idea to get a new timing chain. Seeing how you have a 00 you should get a new LS6 oil pump. It's def. recommended. Awesome cam though, I missed out on the GP.

Why do I need a 112 LSA for an M6?

The reason I intend to go with a 114 is because I've heard that 114 is as big as you should go if you want a car that idles well, doesn't need special tuning, and still meets emissions requirements (which I don't care too much about).

114 is fine with an M6.

Definitely get rid of the Slowmaster muffler. They lose power on the LS1 cars... it's been dyno proven.

Properly tuned, the car will be plenty reliable. Thunder is a great shop to buy from, great service and products. You'll be hard pressed to find someone that isn't a repeat customer.

you can also do a search on www.LS1Tech.com about this cam. You'll find anything you can shake a stick at there.

actually stick with the 114... youll make more power on nitrous..

youre going to want custom tuning anway.. 112 or 114

Talk to Paul at TR, he even says to go with the 112 on M6's & the 114 on A4's. Most of Ls1tech will agree too. Call him up & he'll explain.

The 114 LSA will work fine in an M6, or has mine. The idle with a 114 is much better, and will put out lower emmissions. The cam itself will not wear anything much faster than stock other than valve springs, which assuming you go with 918's should be replaced every 20-25K miles.

The Ti retainers are lighter than stock, and should be easier on the valvesprings.

Now if you are going to spray and need this to last "years", you should invest in a low fuel pressure switch and window switch, and make sure it is running a little fat at ideal bottle pressure so it isn't lean when the pressure goes up a little (gotta love Texas heat). Even if it never goes lean, the nitrous use will accelerate wear on the rod and main bearings.

Thanks for the comments.

I already have a fuel pressure switch for the nitrous, and I will be installing a window switch in the near future. Safety is my #1 concern with the nitrous.

I'll be ordering the TR 224/224-114 through the Thunder Racing Group Purchase on June 12. That's one heck of a deal for their camshaft package!

Hmmm... I like my 111 LSA on my A4...with just a little tuning...she runs great.
