Synthetic oil
Castrol GTX dino oil for me
.
A couple reasons why:
1) I started using Mobil 1 for the first oil change or two, and the cost is like, ~$35 for oil and filter vs ~$15 for oil and filter using regular oil.
2) My dad is a mechanic, and I've helped him rebuild several motors before. One was for a friend who had a 350 in his full-size van. He swore up and down that all he ever ran was Mobil 1 religiously.................well ya know what? That motor was cooked just as bad as any other engine I've seen torn apart, and yet it didn't even have extremely high mileage on it
.
3) We've had 2 or 3 vehicles with well over 200,000 miles on them (~325,000+ kms) and they only ever used regular oil, yet ran fine.
The key is regular maintenance
. Spend more than twice the cost if you want, but as long as your car is on a regular oil change schedule, it will run fine on non-synthetic

mobil 1
ive been using mobil 1 synthetic for years now with no problems. as far as it being thinner, i use 15-30 on my camaro and 5-30 on my 95 blazer, and '00 chevy 3500. the 15 weight needs a good 20 seconds before you put it in gear in the morning, meaning not thin at all. cost wise; i went in halfers with a friend, we bought a 55 gallon drum from a discount supply house i.e sams, bj's, costco whatever, anyway cost was $875. not bad for almost a lifetime of oil changes for about 5 vehicles. blazer is at over 135k miles and shows very little wear thanx to regular changes and mobil-1. still beats some ricers too. long live 4.3 and 5.7

read Johnny and ken's answers. That site has some great info about any oil your interested in.
Castrol GTX 5w-30 for me..I feel that synthetic is only good for extended drain intervals..Since i would rather have good clean oil, than dirty synthetic oil, i use the GTX and change it every 3K miles. With my YZ250F, (its a 4 stroke motocross bike for those who dont know what i'm talking about)..I use Shell Rotella T non synthetic...change it every 2-3 rides..which would probably be about 100 miles..Every blown up one that i've ever seen, has been from running synthetic, and trying to go for extended drain intervals..Any good name brand clean conventional oil, is better than dirty synthetic oil, IMO.
my dad got me into using pennzoil he had a 89 formula that made it to 248,000 miles and he traded it in had it new only ran pennzoil also the truck i now have was his he got new in 93 it is a silverado v8 5.7 it had 267,000 miles on it only ran pennzoil then the engine flooded for a silly reason and the engine finally started and had a knock spun a rod bearing that is quite a few miles on them cars so all i will ever run is pennzoil also my dad did not baby his car and truck either. he only changed the oil about every 5000 miles in the truck. but i had to rebuild the engine in it though. just my 2 cents

The Redline oil I use is like $10.00 per quart and the K&N oil filter is a bit pricey too. I use a full 6 quarts in my LS1s. I get a lot of flack from people about spending an unnecessary $10.00 per quart of oil that I change every 2500-3000 miles(in my SS, 3500-4500 in my WS6). An oil change will cost me about $70.00 but it takes me about 3-4 months to rack up 2000 miles on my SS and 2-3 for the WS6. I look at it this way....$140.00 investment 3-4 times a year is nothing compared to the entire investment of both cars...mods, and car price! AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION IS WORTH A POUND OF CURE.
