Stock oil pump for cam? & Timing Chain Q.

There should be no problem w/ this right? Running a stock oil pump on just a cam? I suppose while I'm in there I mind as well do the ported unit and a new LS2 timing chain.

One last one, Why is the LS2 a stronger chain, and what's wrong w/ using the stock LS1 chain on a big cam such as the MS4?

Just curious.. Thanx.

Dont second guess yourself.. Do it right the first time.. Your already in there.. Upgrade everything for good piece of mind..

LS6 ported pump
LS2 Timing chain set

Here is why the LS2 is alot stronger than the LS1. The pic says it all..

LS1 oil pumps are prone to just going out with out warning so as stated above save your self some trouble and do it while its already torn apart and give yourself alittle insurance.

Only a few 98 and very early 99 LS1 pumps had any problems. And that was very specific in that the oil pressure bypass piston bore on some pumps was rough and could maybe stick open at max oil pressure causeing the motor to not have any oil pressure at lower rpms. So let's not blow that all out of proportion.

That being said, it just doesn't make sense to have the pump off in your hands and not put a ported higher flow pump on.

Any time you do a cam swap where the motor makes more power and makes it higher, you should do the ported pump and LS2 chain.

Ok.. Cool.. Thanx y'all!

I'll have to break out my 'custom' 10mm LSx Oil Pump wrench we made for my buddy's H/C swap... ... Eliminates having to drop the oil pan for clearance..

I'm running the stock pump. Its been over a year of daily driving since the cam change. There are others in the area with Trex and MS3 cams that are also running the stock pump and they beat on their car much more that I do.

Its up to you and sure won't hurt to go to a ported pump.

The LS2 chain is cheap and noticable thicker so why not? Yes, I did do this upgrade.

Post some pictures of the wrench if you don't mind , I'm sure alot of people would benefit from it.

It's at my buddy's place... We took the boxed end of a cheap-o combination 10mm wrench and ground the boxed end down to an angle (thin enough) so it can fit between the oil pan and the pump pickup tube connection.

Sorry for the 3rd grade MS Paint, but this should give you an idea.
