started ticking/knocking all of a sudden...100miles from home HELP

installed headers last week. drove over 100 miles on semi short trips. ran great.

left for a short road trip. drove 80 miles, reved it up a bit on a side road, all of a sudden started ticking or knocking...

runs a bit rough, but not bad. sound quickens with rpms.

when i reved it up, i didn't even hit the rev limiter, only went to about 5500 rpms in 3rd, then shifted.

it ticks/knocks about 2 times per second at idle...give or take

does this sound like an exhaust leak?

i am in the middle of a vacation road trip...NEED HELP

The way you describe it I would think it's an exahust leak, did you remove the A.I.R?? It could be the check ***** fluttering from the A.I.R system

Sounds like an exhaust leak to me too. Check your collector gaskets. If they are the paper ones you should get some good metal gaskets.

it doesn't have the "psht" sound of an exhaust leak. more like a real loud tapping from the top of the engine.

i found info on the check valves...have a hunch it's that.

the AIR is still on there but the fuse is out so the pump isn't working. i'm gonna try to do a make shift block off with some tin and see if that stops it.

thanks guys...

well i just tried the "block off for the AIR" and it didn't make any difference.

i'm thinking i may have a f-ed up pushrod or rocker arm.

Sounds like what happened to me a couple weeks ago... it was a ticking sound that increased with RPM's and stayed constant at idle. Can you tell which side of the valve covers the sound is coming from?

My issue turned out to be a failed lifter and pushrod on #3 Intake. Everything's running smoothly now

Shouldn't be too hard for you to narrow down which side of the motor it's coming from then pulling the cover and checking the pushrods. I would think they would be more prone to being bent rather than a rocker arm being messed up.

i actually can't seem to figure out which side it is coming from. its strange.

i guess i am thinking the rocker arm because ive heard of some of the bearings falling apart.

this may be a stupid queston but could i drive it home? lol

i don't want to take it the dealer, they will charge me out the butt and since i have all the mods done to it.

well i will keep you updated

Hmmm. . . if it's the bearing I wouldn't drive it too much simply because those bearings tend to find their way into the oil pan and, well, I wouldn't want them to end up ruining my engine.

well...i think it was a lifter....more metalic than the sound of an exhaust leak.

even stranger than when it started, drove it 30 miles towards home (maybe not smart but oh well) and if completely stopped

no more sound...not sure what gives?
