SSRA vs Downpour
SSRA vs Downpour
It was raining just aweful (flash flood warnings everywhere) last night here, and I was out in it. There have been alot of questions as to water intake and the SSRA. I had spray from my front tires clearing the car most of the ride home. I decided to stand in the rain and check to see if it had injested any water. The verdict is that my airbox was as dry as ever. I guess that should clear up that dilemma.
Hydrolock has occurred before with systems like the FTRA, and it's something you don't want to experience. Last incident I heard of was a guy trying to drive through standing water, though. I'm not sure of the effects in downpours, but I'm sure it can still happen from a big puddle.
I really don't think it's worth risking, and I don't feel like bothering with a blockoff plate of some sort every time it gets wet outside. I'll find my horsepower in other ways.

yeah.. me too.. dont feel like adding all the fuss...
good to know that your car can handle it though.. just dont get cocky and think you can make it through a slight flood.. cause the risks are too great.. you almost always have more time than $$.. at least thats how I am.. would rather sit in car dry idleing than in water dead..

I wasn't real happy about it, but there have been a lot of people wondering about hydrolock with this product. In a heavy rain it has not been a problem. All of this talk about puddles is mystifying. This thing sits about 7 inches off of the ground and in front of the tires. There is not wat for you to splash water in from your tires, and if you drive you car through 7 inch deep puddles, well then I don't know what to say.

Any time you open the bottom of these cars you expose yourself to the potential of hydrolock ... to say you drove in a rain storm and everything was fine, is the equivalent of jumping the GF w/o protection and since she didn't get pregnant, it's safe to do it all the time ...

On me, that is about 4 or 5 inches depending on the shoe. I would guess that if the airdam just touches the water you run the risk of hydrolock. IMHO I would not remove the block-off on these ram-air systems unless I was at that track or I knew that the weather was going to be dry.
